Police caught on camera parking their van in a taxi rank to go food shopping

By Carl_Eve | Posted: June 09, 2016

'Want anything from the shop?'

Hungry cops have had their knuckles rapped after they parked in a taxi rank to grab a spot of dinner.

The photo was sent to The Herald by an aggrieved Hackney carriage taxi driver who's friend spotted the large police carrier parked in the clearly signed taxi bay at the Ridgeway car park in Plympton.

The council-owned car park allows for free parking and is adjacent to the Co-operative store car park, which is also free to customers.

The taxi driver said the police vehicle was spotted at 5.48pm on June 6. He revealed how his friend claimed the car park was empty at the time and had spotted officers leaving the nearby store carrying shopping bags.

The taxi driver – who has asked not to be named – said: "My friend sent me the photo as he knows Hackney carriage drivers are picked upon, to say the least, for parking offences yet the police have double standards.

"Hackney carriage by laws state no vehicles are allowed on Hackney carriage ranks except Hackney carriages. And police/ emergency vehicles may only park or stop during emergency situations.

"Going into the Co-op and coming out with shopping clearly is not an emergency situation.

"I believe it's also in the Highway Code paragraph 42 or 43 I believe.

'Is that your riot van in the taxi rank officer?'

A red-faced police spokesman said: "Following completion of patrol in Plymouth, some officers had stopped to pick up food in Ridgeway.

"They were not responding to a call and therefore those responsible have been told in no uncertain terms that their actions in relation to their parking were unacceptable and are now clear of the repercussions if this happens again.

"We apologise for their actions."

If the taxi rank is on private property, then it's not worth the paint it's painted with, same as disabled spaces, mum and obese kids bays and the like. Unless it's a council cab rank in a council car park and is authorised under the parking regulations.

Agreed, with regard to this rank, it is correct and covered in the Traffic Regulation Order.
