Millionaire faces jail for 'Raging Bull' attack on minicab driver, 71, while drunk on vintage champagne

A millionaire property developer is facing years behind bars for launching a 'Raging Bull' attack on a minicab driver after drinking £14,000 worth of vintage champagne.

Craig Pesch, 33, had been out for school renuion drinks at some of London's most exclusive bars before ordering a cab to pick him up at 4.20am outside the exclusive Maddox Club in Mayfair.

When 71-year-old Delta Minicabs driver Ratid Shilaka struggled to find one of Pesch's houses on his satnav, the drunken businessman threw a 'merciless' volley of punches at the pensioner's face.

Mr Shilaka was rushed to hospital and had to undergo surgery to rewire his jaw after Pesch fled the scene stained with his victim's blood.

The unprovoked beating was so violent it was likened to Robert De Niro's portrayal of ultra violent boxing middleweight Jake La Motta, Westminster Magistrates heard.

"Mr Shilaka was a punching bag for a Raging Bull,' said prosecutor Edward Aydin.

"Mr Pesch mercilessly punched the victim in a sustained attack with immense force.

"He was strapped into his seatbelt at the time and Mr Pesch was knocking him around like a rag doll."

The court heard the confusion over Pesch's new-build address was the only motive for the brutal assault that has forced Mr Shilaka out of work and left him drinking liquidised food through a straw.

Mr Aydin said: "He got into Mr Shilaka's minicab and told him he wanted to go to SW18. Mr Shilaka put the address into his satnav but it didn't show as a valid address.

"Mr Pesch then got out the car, opened the driver's door and began punching Mr Shilaka repeatedly."

Pesch told officers he had "fallen over" when he was found at 4.40am covered in blood under the statue of Ronald Reagan at the U.S. Embassy in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair.

He initially denied all knowledge of the attack, offering "no remorse, no guilt, no mea culpa", and later claimed he had been drunk.

"In all the witness statements there is no evidence of him being drunk, of him being unsteady, or his speech slurred, it's only him saying he was drunk and had drank £14,000 worth of alcohol," said Mr Aydin.

"Mr Pesch gave him a beating he will never ever forget, and no-one will know if Mr Shilaka will get his self-esteem back and his dignity as a man."

Mr Shilaka was treated for facial lacerations that were "oozing blood" at St Mary's Hospital in Praed Street, Paddington, and was later transferred to Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, Middlesex, for surgery.

He has suffered from flashbacks since the attack and has been too fearful to return to work, losing out on £7,200 in wages.

Pesch admitted causing grievous bodily harm during the incident on August 7.

He submitted a statement to court which read: "I can't explain my actions that night and I'm disgusted by my actions that night."

Defence barrister William Clegg QC said: "There is no evidence of Mr Pesch previously committing violence - ever."

Pesch was warned he faces certain jail sentence by chair of the bench Stevie Dee, who said: "This was an attack on someone doing their job.

"This is a sustained assault on a vulnerable victim. There was no escape for the victim who was strapped in by his seatbelt.

"This is a category one offence, and too serious for this court."

Pesch, of Kings Road, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, was released on bail before his committal for sentence at Southwark Crown Court.

Champagne-quaffing millionaire who battered elderly minicab driver 'because he couldn't find address on SatNav' spared jail

Thug Craig Pesch, a 34-year-old property developer, launched a barrage of punches at Ratid Shilaka, 71, which left him with horrendous injuries

A champagne-guzzling millionaire who battered an elderly minicab driver because he couldn't find his address on a SatNav has been spared jail.

Property developer Craig Pesch, 34, left Ratid Shilaka, 71, drinking liquidised food through a straw after launching a vicious attack on him following a night out.

Pesch had spent the night drinking £14,000 of vintage champagne at exclusive private members club Maddox in Mayfair, London, when he ordered a cab home.

When Mr Shilaka arrived, he struggled to find Pesch's address on his SatNav because it was a new development.

Pesch flew into a rage, got out and opened the driver's door before throwing a volley of punches in the victim's face.

The drunken businessman then fled the scene while Mr Shilaka was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

His jaw was left so badly broken it had to be rewired, several teeth were displaced, and he has been unable to work ever since.

Pesch, of Kings Road, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, admitted causing grievous bodily harm in March but magistrates decided the offence was so serious he should be sentenced by a Crown Court.

However, Recorder Stephen Hofmeyr QC allowed him to walk free, suggesting there were factors "which tend to reduce the seriousness or reflect personal mitigation."

Character witness Julia Bayliss - a friend of Pesch's parents - described the defendant as "quite a gentle person" and said she had never seen him "worse for wear" because of alcohol.

Ms Bayliss said she Pesch was "never aggressive" as a child and had been "an emotional wreck" since the incident last August 7.

But at an earlier hearing, prosecutor Edward Aydin had likened the attack to Robert De Niro's portrayal of ultra violent boxing middleweight Jake La Motta.

"Mr Shilaka was a punching bag for a Raging Bull," said Mr Aydin.

"Mr Pesch mercilessly punched the victim in a sustained attack with immense force.

"He was strapped into his seatbelt at the time and Mr Pesch was knocking him around like a rag doll."

He said the only motive for the brutal assault was confusion over Pesch's new-build address.

Pesch was arrested half an hour later near the U.S. Embassy in Grosvenor Square covered in blood, but told officers he had "fallen over".

Magistrates decided the offence was so serious it should be sent to Southwark Crown Court

He initially denied all knowledge of the attack, offering "no remorse, no guilt, no mea culpa" and later claimed he had been drunk.

Mr Aydin said: "In all the witness statements there is no evidence of him being drunk, of him being unsteady, or his speech slurred, it's only him saying he was drunk and had drank £14,000 worth of alcohol.

"Mr Pesch gave him a beating he will never ever forget, and no-one will know if Mr Shilaka will get his self-esteem back and his dignity as a man."

Mr Shilaka was treated for facial lacerations that were 'oozing blood' at St Mary's Hospital Paddington and was later transferred to Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow for surgery.

In a statement, Mr Shilaka said he has suffered from flashbacks since the attack and has been too fearful to return to work, claiming to have lost out £7,200 in wages.

Defence barrister William Clegg QC said Pesch was "deeply ashamed" and has not drank alcohol since the incident.

Despite the seriousness of the offence, Judge Hofmeyr handed Pesch just a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Pesch was also ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work and to pay Mr Shilaka £1,000 in medical compensation.
