Leeds cabbies train in child protection

Almost 1,400 Leeds cabbies have received child protection training in the wake of the Rotherham sexual grooming scandal and links to the taxi and private hire trades.

A Leeds City Council watchdog panel was told yesterday (April 21) that 1,398 drivers had already received the now compulsory sessions designed to provide Hackney carriage and private hire drivers, operators and escorts with “an understanding of their responsibilities to safeguard young people”.

To date 1,398 licence holders have attended safeguarding sessions in Leeds with four sessions being held every month. Training in Leeds is headed up by the independent Leeds Safeguarding Children’s Board (LSCB). It is also being offered by other similar panels in West Yorkshire.

A meeting at Leeds Civic Hall yesterday was also told that the city is still looking into a proposed change in policy for taxi and private hire licence applicants born outside of the UK.

A report to the Children’s Services Scrutiny Panel said any new legislation would include the introduction of online annual criminal records checks and a new reporting system “to enable immediate enforcement action to be taken”.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported last year that prospective cabbies in Leeds could face stricter checks after concerns were raised about the current process. Applicants from outside the UK will have to provide more information before they pass the ‘fit and proper person’ test.

It follows inquiries into the Rotherham grooming scandal, which found that cabs had been used to ferry children around for exploitation. However the inquiry by the LSCB also found that the risk was not linked directly to children using taxis for transport, as their usage was actually “quite limited”.

Oh really! Teachers are with children 30 constant hours a week - how many have they spotted that have been abused/exploited? Going along with your "Yes they should be trained"! How many do you think that taxi drivers are going to spot in a 5/10/15 minute journey when they are concentrating on their driving?

It is no more than a buck passing/we are being seen to be doing something exercise.

Although I generally tend to agree with you here John, I have heard the kids in my car talking to each other about stuff that they would not say anywhere near a teacher but the invisible taxi driver is just that, invisible.

I agree, if teachers can't spot it how the hell are we supposed to spot it? I await the first child to get abused where these courses have been implemented.

It would appear that a lot of the child abuse that has happened, has been due to social services being afraid to point the finger at various communities, for fear of offending them or losing their jobs!

So how is it going to pan out if a taxi driver makes an accusation/report of what he apparently saw/heard in his cab/PH vehicle. If you have lack of proof, followed by denials, it is your word verses theirs ........are you/I likely to be sued for libel/defamation of character- are drivers being dragged into the world of litigation?

It seems to me that we are being used as a tool for those who would like to "being seen to be doing something". Do you hear about teachers/bus drivers/carers/ etc HAVING to go on this course + as mentioned........what are the legal ramifications for a driver who thinks he/she has heard/seen something that leaves them open to being sued.

Anyone who has read the details of what happened in Rotherham and other places across the UK will know that ''social services '' and ''Police'' failed these children most of whom were females.
A lot of them complained to the Police and no action was taken...similarly no action taken by anyone from the council who were forced to resign by central gov't in London.
So, why is it that Taxi drivers are being singled out ?...It is our job to ferry people from a to b and whenever we have asked for help from people in power it has not been forthcoming.
This is just more jobs for the boys who earn money out of running these schemes and achieve no results !

The thing is this is meant to stop taxi drivers preying on young children BUT if they are minded to do that in the first place training them in how to spot the signs isn't going to help

Furthermore are we going to be open to prosecution if we fail to spot warning signs and a child that has been in our vehicle is subsequently found to have been abused ? Are drivers being set up as scapegoats by councils keen to protect themselves and their employees ?
