Liverpool cabbie finds doctor's laptop in back of taxi and drives 200 miles to London to return it

Top paediatrician hails the 'instrinsic kindness' of Liverpool people

A doctor was left bowled over by a kindhearted Liverpool taxi driver who drove more than 200 miles to return his lost laptop.

Paediatrician Dr Zeshan Qureshi was visiting the city last Wednesday for a conference at the Liverpool ECHO Arena and Convention Centre in Kings Dock.

But the top medic accidentally left his £400 Samsung computer in the back of a cab in the early hours of the morning, realising he’d forgotten it as the vehicle pulled away, close to the Hampton by Hilton Hotel, on the Liverpool waterfront.

The 31-year-old accepted the laptop was lost and held out little hope of getting it back.

Astonished by generosity

So, he was stunned when the same cabbie arrived on his doorstep in Lewisham, south east London, with the laptop to hand back to him.

Dr Qureshi, who works at Queen Elizabeth and Great Ormond Street Hospitals in London, shared his astonishment about the Scouse generosity on social media, in a posting which has since gone viral.

He said: “I’ve just returned from Liverpool. I left my laptop in a taxi.

“Everyone told me it would be stolen and that I should accept that. I subsequently didn’t even bother filing a police report.

“The taxi driver’s response?

“He remembered the name of the hotel I stayed at, gave them his contact details and asked them to get me to call him.

“As soon as I called him he said he’d get the laptop to me, and post it.

“I found out today he’d gone one better.

“He’d driven 200 miles, and delivered the laptop straight to me.

“What a wonderful reminder of the intrinsic kindness of people.”

It has now emerged the driver works for ComCab, a black taxi company who operate from their Falklands Street HQ on the outskirts of the city centre.

'We're really proud of him'

Their bosses described the Good Samaritan employee as ‘shy’ who didn’t want to be identified for his kindness.

But sales and marketing manager Claire Langrell told the ECHO: “It’s a really nice surprise, but we’re not surprised one of our drivers has gone above and beyond.

“We’re really proud of him.

“We’ve been working in Liverpool for 60 years and our drivers have been servicing the city for a long time.

“They know that taxi drivers are often the first and last impression visitors get of Liverpool.”

The cabbie had contacted the Hampton to find out his customer’s details, and then drove all the way down to London, last Saturday, to return the laptop, leaving it with a relative because Dr Quereshi was still at work.
