Taxi firm 'refused' to drive disabled pensioner because they said he was ‘TOO SMELLY’

A DISABLED pensioner claims a taxi service he was a loyal customer to refused to pick him up as he smelled too badly.

Keith Cronshaw, 76, has filed an official complaint after claiming he called for a cab only to be told they would not pick him up due to his odour.

The widow, who recently had a leg amputated due to gangrene, was in his local pub when he asked the landlady to call Betty’s Coaches and Cars for him.

Mr Cronshaw said he has consistently used the firm over the past 10 months with no problems.

But his daughter Carol Pope, who was with him in the Walmsley Arms, Lancashire, said: “We asked the landlady to ring for a taxi to bring us home and she asked them to repeat what they said to me.

"They said none of the drivers would pick him up because he smells.

"The person on the phone said he could not get anyone.

"Until this happened, my dad had used the firm for 10 months and nothing was said."

Mr Cronshaw had phoned for a car to take him to visit his late wife, Eunice, in hospital.

Miss Pope said after her father developed gangrene and the hospital was forced to operate.

Now confined to a wheelchair, his daughter continued: "They had to amputate above the knee.

"The pressure sore was from being sat in his chair while visiting my mum and the cream he uses does have a slight smell to it.

"This has had a massive impact on him, he didn't go out for two weeks.

"We were in the pub at the time shortly after my mum passed away and he started crying."

Mr Cronshaw branded the company “disgraceful” and formally complained to Hyndburn Council, who issues taxi licenses in the borough.

He said: "This is no way to treat their customers.

"It is like they have thrown a big hammer at me."

The company, which has been operating for 35 year, is being investigated by the council, leader Cllr Miles Parkinson confirmed.

But bosses deny the accusation, instead saying a lack of staff was the reason no car was sent to pick him up.

The managing director of Betty's Coaches and Cars, Gordon Kahn, said: "I was running the depo myself that evening and the service was refused due to a shortage of staff at that time of day

We have refused taxis to several people due to their personal hygene. We are in the process of giving up a home to college contract because the lad gets in the car with dog hair stuck in the mud on his jeans which he then brushes off all over the car floor. The more he brushes off the more you can smell where the mud has come from, he works part time in a stables and the smell is of horse sh!t.
Why should drivers have to put up with this?

Can't fault you handing it back. I threw one back not so long ago. Went to a farm to pick two kids up who are there due to them not being allowed into school. When one of them got in the car he was covered in pig shit and mud. When he got out the front seat was covered in the stuff. A quick call to Notts CC to hand it back.

Another one thinking of no-one else but themselves.
What about the other passengers who have to get in the cab after him, what happens when they complain to the council about the cab being smelly ? What about the firm losing customers because it's cabs smell or the poor driver who has to put up with an obnoxious odour throughout the journey and the rest of their shift ?

If there was just a slight smell from the cream I don't think there would be a problem.

We've banned several customers for being smelly, although these are the ones that tend to be at the extreme end of the incontinence scale and not only smell of urine but tend to leave a damp patch on the seat when they get out. I know it's harsh but we have to consider other passengers as well.

Surely its accepted that all passengers are clean and aroma free ? otherwise they're a Health Hazard and you of course have a duty of care to yourself to avoid health hazards! :D :D SIMPLES #-o

Can't you refuse people with reasonable excuse? If that person stinks to high heaven then that's a reasonable excuse.

i used to refuse one all the time at my last job so did most of the lads, i was nearly sick when i used to pick him up, my eyes were eyes watering ,retching & had the car stinking, like i said once before on here , they put in a "recover 2 jobs & you are banned for 24hrs" rule , so you were pretty much being forced to do it or lose 24hrs graft, totally wrong imho like, should have just banned the pi££ stained tramp

Couple of years ago a lad used to run a breakdown mechanic around claiming it is a good earner, until one evening he picked up a fare off the rank going to a big do at the assembly rooms,it cost him the best part of £400,
One of the woman got an oil stain on her off white mohair twin piece, unfortunately for him no cleaning system could remove it and he had to pay for a knew outfit.

If I don't want to do a job, I don't.

TBH I don't really have a problem with smelly punters, as long as they aren't leaking stuff from somewhere.

But we are not ambulances, and if a driver is made ill by the stench coming from a punter, then I would support him binning off the job.

However the question must arise, as to why the boss who was working didn't offer his services. :-k
