Regulation of taxi CCTV goes before West Dunbartonshire councillors PROPOSED policy to regulate the use of CCTV in West Dunbartonshire taxis and private hire cars has gone in front of councillors for consideration. The report was discussed at a meeting of West Dunbartonshire Council’s licensing committee. The proposals have been drafted following inquiries relating to the legality of installing CCTV recording devices in taxis. Because there is currently no policy or licence conditions in place, licensing staff have no power to regulate the use of recording equipment. Taxi operators have indicated that they wish to install systems in their vehicles to prevent crime, ensure the safety of drivers and reduce insurance costs. A consultation was carried out with Police Scotland and representatives from the taxi trade. Even if introduced, there will be no requirement on taxi or private hire licence holders to install any recording equipment in their vehicles. Dashboard cameras that record images outside the vehicle will not be included in the policy. Other proposed stipulations included in the report relate to privacy of passengers and how long images could be kept before deletion. Councillors agreed that the proposed policy and conditions would come back before them at a later date for further consideration. source: http://www.clydebankpost.co.uk/news/144 ... uncillors/ |
