Hundreds of drivers fight council's 'ridiculous' new taxi rules

CONTROVERSIAL plans have been drawn up to ban motorists with penalty points on their licence from becoming taxi drivers.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council wants to bring in the rule for new applicants to try to improve the driving standards of Hackney carriage and private hire cabbies.

But hundreds of existing taxi drivers have condemned the proposal – branding it unfairly strict because it is too easy to fall foul of speed cameras.

'Insisting on clean driving licences for new applicants was a foolish idea'

Now the council's lawyers are advising the 'inflexible' proposal should be dropped.

Committee members will meet to discuss the raft of suggested changes to taxi licensing rules at a meeting tomorrow.

I would say so - not sure if Stoke council insist on the taxi dsa test - it maybe a worthwhile idea for them to consider.

bad idea as it puts off many potentially descent drivers but those who are desperate enough will find a way round it. Whats wrong with taking each case on merit it is quite easy to make a mistake but those with a history of getting points should be weeded out as that is indicative of poor driving
