Significant increase in Sefton taxi license applications

The license application process involves a background check and local knowledge test

The number of license applications for Sefton taxis went up by 18 per cent over the last year.

A Taxi Performance report for 2015/16 revealed that the total number of license applications was 6929, which is an increase of 1047 against the year 2014/15.

Before Sefton Council grants any taxi driver a license applicants must demonstrate they are a "fit and proper person" to hold the license. The Council requires all new and renewing drivers to obtain an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) report, which will contain information about any criminal records or motoring convictions.

An integral part of the licence application process is the geographic knowledge test. The test is designed to test a driver’s knowledge of the local area. The taxi performance report shows a 7 per cent increase in the pass rate in the Bootle One Stop Shop and a 5 per cent decrease in Southport One Stop Shop during 2015/16.

It just goes to show how reading something in the news can be misleading. It would have been correct up to about 2 months ago but that has all now changed. There have been very few new drivers or vehicle applications made in Sefton during the last 2 months due to the fact that the private hire companies with apps are sending them to Knowsley to be licenced. They have virtually taken their knowledge test and binned it. There are no routes to learn. It is so simple, apart from the fact that it checks to see if you speak English, there is no reason for it in its present form. Knowsley will become for the ph driver, what Berwick was to the hackney trade, simply a cash cow, no real standards, which should be a worry to other areas, as the licencing officer involved, holds a high position in one of the national officers associations.
