Don't talk about sex, kiss passengers or ask them out on dates — dos and don'ts for Bury taxi drivers

TAXI drivers have been told they must not talk about sex with passengers — or try to kiss them.

Cabbies must also refrain from asking their customers out on dates and should not ask for their phone numbers.

The list of dos and don’ts is detailed in a new Bury Council report that considers how taxi drivers should treat people while they are at work.

Licensing chiefs said they are letting drivers know what is expected of them and say many of the disciplinary hearings they deal with concern sex matters.

Cabbies’ representatives, meanwhile, have welcomed the changes, but say there is a danger of going too far.

“We don’t want to reach a point where drivers are scared stiff of offending someone, and feeling like they have to sit in silence,” said Charles Oakes, chairman of the Hackney Drivers’ Association, who represents some drivers of black cabs in Bury.

Mr Oakes also pointed out that sometimes customers were just as bad and he was aware of incidents were customers had had sex in the back of taxis.

Bury Licensing Committee deals with complaints about drivers in private and there are no figures on the types of issues they deal with. However, the committee’s chairman, Cllr David Jones said: “A lot of the issues we deal with are related to these kind of considerations.

“It may be a lone female who takes exception to being asked if she is in a relationship, for example, and these things need to be considered.

“The change is part of our continuing attempts to improve standards of taxi drivers across the borough.”

Published week, The Bury Licensing Committee report says taxi drivers will be given a home study pack, which says “drivers must not engage with customers in inappropriate conversation”.

The report gives examples of what is considered to be inappropriate conversations or conduct.

It lists: asking a passenger if they are in a relationship, complimenting a passenger on their looks, talking about sex, asking for a passenger’s phone number for personal use, offering to meet a passenger socially, touching or kissing a passenger and inviting a passenger to sit in the front seat when they have expressed a wish to sit in the back.

Cllr Jones added: “The argument is that, if drivers are aware of these requirements initially, they cannot say they were not warned should they find themselves at a licensing review panel.”

He added that the vast majority of Bury taxi drivers conducted themselves well.

Mr Oakes added: “Drivers have been made aware that, in this day and age, discussing some subjects is inappropriate.”

“I welcome this change because some drivers have been reported for doing things for doing and saying things they shouldn’t have.

“However, it’s important to be balanced: Revoking drivers’ taxi permits as a result of such complaints can be devastating for them and their families and we do not want them to feel as though they have to sit in silence during taxi journeys.”

It's common sense really drunken females will always take a different view of events in the sober light of day and you don't know what they might pass on to you
