Woman killed by reversing taxi Eyewitnesses have spoken of the horrifying sounds they heard when a reversing taxi pinned a 71-year-old woman to the ground. Vera Tranter from Market Rasen was pronounced dead at Hull Royal Infirmary on September 1, 2015, after being involved a collision with a Vauxhall Vivaro. Statements read out at an inquest hearing held Spilsby Coroners' Court, described the terrifying sounds passersby heard. Sophie Clarke, a car passenger nearby, said: "The lady was about one foot away from the rear of the taxi. "I continued to look at her as we contined down the road. "When we were alongside the taxi I started to look forward and not pay attention to it. "Then my boyfriend said 'I think that taxi has just run over someone'. "I got out straight away - I could hear the lasy screaming very loudly." Sheila Albon, who was also nearby, said: "She was screaming at the top of her lungs." Mrs Tranter had been standing behind the black taxi, which had pulled up outside the Market Rasen Medical Centre to pick up a person with special needs, when the incident took place on Gordon Field. Multiple members of staff from the centre said they also heard screaming. Driver Richard Hutchings failed to see or hear Mrs Tranter when he began reversing back. Mr Hutchings said he could not hear any screams from outside the vehicle as his passenger was making noise in the back and rocking the vehicle - which was supported by another eyewitness. Speaking at the inquest, he said: "I started to reverse about five or six feet back and I could see a vehicle coming round and someone shouted out 'there's a lady lady or something underneath the vehicle'. "At the same time the vehicle stopped and sounded the horn. "I stopped the vehicle and ran out and could see the lady. "I did not feel it. "I heard no screams or shouts outside the vehicle. "All the screams and noises I heard were inside the mini bus." Mr Hutchings tried to use a jack to lift the vehicle and free Mrs Tranter before emergency services arrived but was unsuccessful. Mr Hutchings said he no longer works as a taxi driver after the incident. A post mortem found Mrs Tranter died as a result of chest and abdominal injuries. A toxicology report found no evidence Mrs Tranter was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. An examination of the vehicle found no defects that could have contributed to the collision, though investigaters could not say for sure contact with the vehicle had caused Mrs Tranter to fall. Marianne Johnson, assistant coroner, concluded Mrs Tranter died as a result of a road traffic collision. In a statement read out in court, Leslie Tranter paid tribute to his wife of 48 years and said he wishes he had more time with her. He said: "I wanted and still want more time with her. "My life will never be the same again, I am left with an indescribable feeling of loneliness." Read more: http://www.lincolnshireecho.co.uk/elder ... z4EPaBW5iw |

people walk or stand behind reversing taxis here every day it's not always easy to see them especially if they walk out of the door of the shop and straight out into the road then scream at you for not seeing them step into the road ! In this case though I presume she was directly behind the car already in which case that's poor driving |
