A taxi boss has told how his firm is proving to be a technological leader as it bids to keep up with the “sea change” in public demand.

Trevor Hines, managing director of Station Taxis in Sunderland, spoke of his firm’s passion for keeping up with industry changes on the day his firm was revealed as the latest entry in this year’s Portfolio Awards.

“We are constantly looking at ways to improve our service and cater for everyone’s needs in a high paced industry.”

The 115-year-old firm continues to be “an integral part of the people of Sunderland’s everyday lives,” said Mr Hines who added: “We are constantly looking at ways to improve our service and cater for everyone’s needs in a high paced industry.”

Station Taxis has invested over £160,000 in technology to streamline taxi booking and create more choice and booking options for our customers.

Last year, it introduced a pay by credit/debit card feature to a taxi booking App, and it has already had more than 13,000 downloads.

The App has been opened over 60,000 times by people in the Sunderland area during the last 90 days, said Mr Hines.

It allows customers to book from their current location, track their taxi and be provided with driver and vehicle details.

The firm has also invested recently in a state-of-the-art telephone system, which will be introduced in August.

Make it Sunderland is again our headline sponsor, and will sponsor our overall Business of the Year Award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award, which is in the sponsor’s gift.

Make It Sunderland is also backing the contribution social enterprises make to the city in the Social Enterprise Award.

Other sponsors are Maxim, Quayside Exchange, K&L Groundworks, UKasl, North East Business & Innovation Centre (BIC), Gentoo and Age UK Sunderland, The Bridges, Stagecoach North East, and TTR Barnes.

To nominate, send your name, address and telephone number, the name of the person or business you wish to nominate, along with their address, telephone number and email (if known).

State which category your nomination applies to (from the list of categories) and provide a description of the reasons for your nomination (no more than 300 words).

Post your nomination to: Nicola Meldrum, Alexander House, Second Floor, Rainton Bridge Business Park, Houghton-le-Spring, Sunderland. DH4 5RA, or email nicola.meldrum@jpress.co.uk or lynn.wild@jpress.co.uk.

Nominations must be received by September 2.
