Woman left needing stitches after being 'dragged down the road' by Uber driver in row over phone

A hairdresser was left needing stitches after allegedly being “dragged down the road” by an angry Uber driver.

Sabrina Benltaief claims she woke up in hospital after the man drove off while she was leaning into his car, leaving her unconscious in the street.

After previously being dropped off by the same driver, Ms Benltaief realised she had left her phone in the passenger seat after leaving it to charge.

But after the driver returned an hour later to return it, Ms Benltaief said he started demanding money in return for the phone.

She put her head through the window on the passenger side of the car to pay the driver and he started driving off with her still leaning into the vehicle, she claims.

The 20-year-old told the Standard: "I went to the window and said thanks for doing that and I appreciated it but then he started looking at me funny.

"He said he'd call the police and started shouting that he wanted £20.

"So I got out my bag and he started driving really quickly. Then I fell out and hit my head.

"I can't remember much after being dragged down the road by him."

Ms Benltaief, from Bromley, said she needed stitches on her head after the incident and has been left with chronic neck pain.

She claimed the incident, which took place outside the Ministry of Sound in Elephant and Castle, has left her frightened to use Uber ever again.

Ms Benltaief said: "I feel disgusted. I get Ubers every single weekend and I don't know if he feels bad or anything.

"He just left me unconscious on the road. I was lucky I was with my friends."

An Uber spokeswoman said the driver in question has been suspended from using the app while the incident is investigated.

She added: "This behaviour is unacceptable for any licensed driver who partners with Uber.

"When we are informed of serious incidents like this, it is our policy to immediately block the driver from using the app while we investigate exactly what happened.

"Safety of both riders and drivers who use the app is our priority and we always work with the police to support any investigation."

A Met Police spokesman confirmed the incident had been logged as a road traffic collision but there will be no further action taken against either party at this stage.

I do hope she puts a nice big claim in for her injuries against Uber

as well as the usual claim on his insurance although in this instance public liability would be the more likely and i doubt the driver has that

I'm not sure I have ever had anyone put their head through a window to pay me.

This would not have been a journey booked with UBER. He was returning her phone. I do believe that UBER have introduced a pay by cash option in some areas as well. Mind you I wonder how she got the drivers phone number unless he had given it to them sugesting that they could book him direct instead of going through UBER.

My understanding of the article is the driver turned up at the address to return the phone no call was actually made

You think he just turned up outside the club where he dropped her off an hour earlier and lo and behold she was stood there waiting for him. I don't think so.

No I think Uber probably messaged him to return the phone and messaged the customer to say he was there

How did the customer contact uber to say she had left her phone? It isn't as though they have any manned offices.

When someone looses there phone first thing they do is phone it, desperate driver answers, knowing a blocked phones worth sfa , and arranges return. Now being an Uber mug every opportunity for extra lolly will be taken. I just hand em into police station .

Your lucky if the police take them off you,we are told we have to hold on to them as it costs to much for the police to run a lost property office.

It is in our conditions that we have to take lost property to the police. Until the police get the Council to change the policy, that is what we do. The police don't like it though.

Ours is too BUT the local police will NOT accept lost property unless it is for security reasons such as a wallet containing large quantities of cash

Our byelaws state we can charge £5 or the fare from the main police station, whichever is greater, to return lost property.

Punters don't think they should pay though (if I've only got round the corner or I'm nearby I don't charge). Did a job, 7'ish miles out of town, so 14 mile round trip, few hours later gets the call 'have you found a phone?'. Next day goes round to drop it off and asks for a tenner (if I'd stuck to the byelaws it would have been over £20), refuses to pay and calls me all sorts of names. No problem, I'll drop it off at the police station *sometime* and you can collect it from there. I waited a week before handing it in, wonder how many trips they made ?
