Liverpool cabbies celebrate 30th anniversary of children in care outing Liverpool taxi drivers celebrated 30 years of treating disadvantaged kids to a great day at the annual summer outing. The colourful cavalcade left Old Swan this morning, along with 12 police motorcycle outriders, to take more than 100 children in care and their carers to a day out at Southport’s Pleasureland attraction. The balloon and ribbon-bedecked taxis were waved off by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Liverpool, Tony and Ann Concepcion, along with the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, Dame Lorna Muirhead DBE, and the Chief Constable of Merseyside police, Sir Jon Murphy. Since the first outing in 1985 to Blackpool Illuminations, it is estimated around 12,000 youngsters have been treated to a day to remember by the Liverpool Taxi Drivers children in care outing fund. The outing’s 30th anniversary coincides with founder Bernie Buxton’s inclusion in this year’s honours list. The 71-year-old from Stockbridge Village, Knowsley, was awarded an MBE for his charitable services. The drivers’ cavalcade has been taking two trips per year for three decades, raising around £300,000 to help young people in care and when they come out of the care system. 30th Annual children's taxi outing to Southport left from Old Swan Conservative club. Lord Mayor and Mayoress wave off the taxis Bernie raises funds for the outings with the support of his fellow cabbies and the generosity of the public. He said: “These kids need a good day out because some of them have been dealt a terrible blow in life.” Southport Pleasureland boss Norman Wallis said: “We are always keen to support the charity’s efforts and ensure everyone has a great day. We’re delighted to join in celebrating this special anniversary, particularly as Bernie has received much-deserved recognition.” The charity’s 30th anniversary will be marked by a special party at the Adelphi hotel on October 9. source: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liv ... ry-9749618 |
