These two criminal masterminds robbed a taxi driver – after he’d driven them home

In a plan so sophisticated it could form the plot for any Hollywood blockbuster, two career criminals decided to rob a taxi driver – after he had dropped them home.

Michael Johnson and Tony Walker have been jailed for five years and four years six months respectively, after they admitted threatening the taxi driver with a knife before stealing cash and a sat nav.

The pair had been picked up near Johnson’s home on Audley Road, Stechford, on June 29 before being taken to near Walker’s flat in Chelmsley Wood.

Needless to say, after the taxi driver called 999, officers didn’t have much trouble arresting the pair at Walker’s home, where they also found the sat nav.

Johnson was also convicted of two further robberies where he stole cash and a mobile phone from his ex-partner and her friend.

Detective Constable Dave Mason, from Solihull’s Acquisitive Crime Team, said: ‘The hapless thugs thought they could get away with the robbery, but what he didn’t realise is that we had had a tip-off that Walker, who was wanted for criminal damage, had just arrived at his property.

‘The taxi driver was able to supply us with a clear description of the offenders and had said that one man had a bandage wrapped around his head.

‘When Johnson was searched at our custody suite we found a bandage that matched the description, hidden in his underwear.

‘They obviously knew that we had a lot of incriminating evidence and they did the right thing by pleading guilty at court.

‘Taxi drivers are in a very vulnerable position as they work alone and we hope that this sends a message that attacks on drivers will not be tolerated and people who do target them have the very real possibility of being jailed.

‘We hope that this conviction brings some comfort to the victim who was subjected to what must have been a terrifying ordeal.’
