Commonsense Regulation

Working in partnership with the Tourism Industry Council, we have identified four areas of regulation where progress can be made to allow tourism businesses to flourish:

• We will seek to deregulate an element of Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) licences as soon as parliamentary time allows. This will allow owners of hotels/ attractions to collect visitors from train stations/ ports of entry, without having to apply for PHV licences (operator, vehicle and driver).

• We will introduce a new, light-touch licensing notice, which will allow small quantities of alcohol to be sold by small accommodation providers to their guests, and by community groups at local events. This will enhance the welcome that small establishments can provide to guests - without requiring them to apply for a full licence.

wondering if the drivers to and from hotels will be DBS checked, if the vehicles will be roadworthy and why this thread isn't getting folk alarmed

Already contacted my MP requesting opposition to this proposal as again they are trying to erode the high standards of public protection using the excuse it will help rich friends to grow their businesses at the expense of the legitimately licensed trade namely PRIVATE HIRE.

Obviously there will be a large impact on the TAXI trade also.

Im not especially alarmed as the current regultions are not being enforced anyway, at least locally..

Ultimately I dont think it will make a difference therefore

I am not alarmed yet because I don't think there is any chance of these 2 proposals getting passed. In the wake of the CSE fiasco I can't see any Government actually letting activities that currently require a license to not require a license.

Don't assume anything a couple of donations from business interests and the government will pull out all the stops to get it through

So one of the government's answers to the issue of sexual abuse within certain parts of the transport industry is to remove all checks and balances for those drivers and vehicles that pick up tourists.

You couldn't make it up.

But apart from the above is there really a demand from these guesthouses and hotel to provide this service?

There must be demand somewhere.
Years ago, before I was in this trade, there was a very good restaurant in a farmhouse about 4 miles from town. They had a chap there who would bring the customers in and take them home again in his long wheelbase landrover with side facing bench seats in the back. the charge was £1.00 per person.
Most customers took advantage of this option instead of driving. No one even considered that this was illegal. This would be one such case where this business would flourish if this came in. (by the way, this doesn't happen now.)

There is part of my that thinks this will be binned, as everything we have seen in the last five years points towards more protection rather than in this case none.

What's stopping a single firm doing all the tourist pick ups in a certain area, using folks who have just come out of prison? Quite sure there will be a nice supply of rapists looking for work, maybe even ex taxi/PH rapists.

But what would constitute a job, and who will check those jobs are in accordance with the law.

This is a mess and the government are acting like a bunch of clowns, and surely the DfT will point out why?

please note - hotels/ attractions

attractions could include theme parks, historical sites, shopping centres - free transport just spend your cash

In all fairness its up to us all to point out the utter stupidity of this proposal, and make politician less naive.
