Police probe following claims of alleged racial abuse by taxi driver in BurtonThe woman claims she was racially abused by a taxi driver in Burton
Police are investigating claims of alleged racial abuse after a female motorist claims she was subjected to a verbal attack by a taxi driver. The woman, who did not want to be named, said her five-year-old nephew had been in her car when she said the abuse happened in Burton on Wednesday.
She has now contacted Staffordshire Police and East Staffordshire Borough Council's licensing department, who are both investigating.
She said: "I had been following my mum in her car and I had my five-year-old nephew in the car with me in the back seat. I was driving in Shobnall Road and trying to turn right into Shobnall Street, and he was on the right hand side trying to cut in and he was on the wrong side of the road.
"I had my window down anyway and he just starting shouting racial abuse at me, and then he sped off. I was shaking afterwards and my nephew was crying. He didn't understand what was going on. I had to then explain racism to him.
"I have never had that at all before. I was absolutely gobsmacked. If it had been the other way around he would have been reporting me so quickly. Why should it be any different?"
The police confirmed the alleged incident had been reported, with a spokesman saying: "We received a report of alleged racial abuse by a taxi driver on Wednesday in Burton. An appointment has been made to see the complainant on Sunday."
A spokesman for East Staffordshire Borough Council said: "The council has been made aware of an allegation against a licensed taxi driver. We take allegations of unacceptable behaviour against licensed drivers very seriously, and any allegations are fully investigated by our enforcement team. Where allegations of a criminal offence are being made this should also be reported to the police, and the council would take the appropriate action upon conclusion of any police investigation."
