Pensioner saved from being trapped under taxi - by her own mobility scooter

The scooter was left wedged under the taxi which had mounted the pavement, meaning it was not low enough to the ground to trap the elderly woman

An elderly woman was knocked off her mobility scooter after a crash with a taxi in Stockport – and the scooter could have saved her from being trapped under the vehicle.

Emergency services were called to Chestergate at about 1pm after the crash, and cordoned off the area.

The 76-year-old woman was left with injuries to her foot, slight head injuries and is suffering from shock, a police spokesman said, and was taken to Stepping Hill hospital for further treatment.

Three fire engines, a rapid response vehicle, ambulance and police all attended.

A member of the Stockport fire crew said the taxi had driven onto the pavement, knocking the elderly woman off her scooter.

The scooter was then trapped under the car, but luckily it propped up the taxi, wedging it up high enough from the pavement so the woman was not trapped underneath.

He said: “The taxi knocked the woman off the scooter, but the scooter held up the taxi so she wasn’t stuck. We made the area safe and comforted the woman, who was in shock, as was the taxi driver.

“The driver wasn’t too sure whether he had a black out, and the incident is being investigated by police.”

Paramedics confirmed a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance were called to the scene outside the Chestergate pub and took the woman to hospital.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the driver mounting the pavement at a high speed, and were concerned that the woman was trapped underneath the vehicle.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Nightmare for both scooter lady and cabby.

I wish them both well.

Same here, I just hope they don't hammer the driver, he's suffered enough.
