London taxi drivers mull legal challenge to credit card changes Taxi drivers in the capital are considering a legal challenge over Transport for London’s plans to force them to accept credit cards. United Cabbies Group, a London taxi union, said it had sought legal opinion on whether to challenge rules that would require all cabs to take credit cards from the end of next month. The group is also preparing to stage a protest in Whitehall this week, although it said it may call that off after the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, offered a boost to taxis, with £65m in grants and the use of new routes. The taxi industry, which has been blindsided by the introduction of the car-hailing app Uber in the capital, overwhelmingly endorsed a proposal to require credit card machines in the passenger section of vehicles last year. However, the plans, which involve raising fares to cover fees, have proved unpopular among some. A separate legal challenge by a different group, Action for Cabbies, was recently dropped after it was denied a judicial review. The deadline for taxi drivers to introduce readers was recently extended from October 3 to October 31. A TfL spokesman said the plan had the support of 86pc of respondents to a consultation. An Uber spokesman said: "Passengers rightly expect to be able to pay by card these days, rather than have to stop at a cash machine" source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2 ... d-changes/ |
