We are getting a new "night rider" bus service in town for a 2 month trial starting next month. It will run on Friday and Saturday nights from 19.00 until 02.00. There will be 2 routes, one to the north of the town and one to the south of the town. It will be an hourly service. The cost will be £2.00 per person each way. I wonder how many people will use it when before 23.00 the taxi fare from the furthest point into town is around £4.00 so if there are 2 of you or more it will be cheaper to get the door to door service of a taxi when you want it and not be stuck to standing outside in all weathers waiting for a bus.
If there was a need for this kind of bus service it would already be running.
This is a town center partnership initiative. I think they canvassed everyone for opinions except the taxi drivers and the customers.

It will ultimately fail but not before it has done some damage to the taxi trade. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't pub landlords suggesting that their lack of trade is down to the price of the taxi home not the price of their beer !

The town center partnership is a group of business owners in the town center witch includes most of the shops, pubs and restaurants. They all pay money into a pot and decide where to spend it to increase trade in the town center. So they are all subsidising this bus service. The only one to win will be the bus company until the money runs out.

It doesn't take much to drive or clean an empty bus.

They binned them round here because they couldn't make any money and their subsidies stopped. Give it two months.

I would look into the funding, see where it's coming from and how much, I know you say the town centre, but I would not be surprised if the council are not giving them some, and if they can give it buses, why can't they give it to taxis? If it affects trade then drivers won't work it anymore, they will start and work different shifts, then when there's no more buses there won't be anymore taxis, this has happened in most places around the country.

Already checked. It is from the business owners.

One of the reasons why it stopped along with the funding side is, people like to be dropped off at the door. Like you mentioned further up, if there's 4 people paying £3 each that's £12, they only get dropped on the main route, they might have another mile to walk. If they all got in a cab they'd be dropped off at the door. Round here the buses were running empty most of the time, there were 4 buses running on 4 routes from 12am until 3am.
