Thug tried to rob a taxi driver by grabbing him around the neck and repeatedly punching him in the face

Daniel Elliott, from Cardiff, was sentenced to two years and eight months, but that has now been increased to four years

A thug who attempted to rob a taxi driver will spend an extra year behind bars after his prison sentence was increased.

Daniel Elliott was jailed for two years and eight months’ for attempted robbery and actual bodily harm at Cardiff Crown Court earlier this year but that term has now been increased to four years.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the incident took place on February 14 when Elliott, 28, got into the front seat of a taxi.
'Repeatedly punched him in the face'

Towards the end of the journey, Elliott, of Firs Avenue, Pentrebane, Cardiff, grabbed the taxi driver around the neck and repeatedly punched him in the face while demanding money.

The victim, who suffered multiple bruises and bleeding to his left eye and nose, tried to press his panic alarm when the offender fled.

Elliott was originally sentenced to two years and eight months on August 5 after a guilty plea.

Eliott was originally sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court

But after the referral to the Court of Appeal, under the unduly lenient sentence scheme, Elliott’s sentence was on Friday increased to four years in prison.

Speaking after the hearing Attorney General Jeremy Wright said: “A taxi driver has the right to feel safe whilst going about their work.

“In my view the original sentence did not accurately reflect the seriousness of this attack and I am glad that the Court of Appeal have agreed that this offender should spend longer in jail.”
