Sheffield taxi rape inquiry 'absolute priority'

The rape of a woman in a taxi is being treated as an "absolute priority" police have said.

Police said the woman had taken a taxi from Sheffield city centre and was driven to the Duke Street area at around 04:50 BST on Sunday.

The 25-year-old was then raped in the vehicle, South Yorkshire Police said.

The woman has received support from specially trained officers and a dedicated team had been assigned to the case.

Temporary Det Insp Graham Stead said: "This is being treated as an absolute priority and we are already pursuing a number of strong lines of enquiry.

"A thorough review of CCTV footage of the area, including the route we believe the taxi took, is also now under way."

CCTV call for Sheffield-based taxis as police continue to investigate rape claim

A call has been made to install CCTV in Sheffield-based taxis after a woman was allegedly raped inside a vehicle.

A 44-year-old man has now been bailed after he arrested on Sunday night.

A 25-year-old woman told police she was raped on Duke Street in the Park Hill area after getting a taxi from West Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Star understand the investigation is a high priority as officers carry out further lines of enquiry.

Ibrar Hussain of GMB union, represents Sheffield licenced black cabs drivers. He said CCTV in taxis works both ways.

Mr Hussain said: "I have nothing against installing CCTV in cabs. It does make sense.

"It works both ways, both parties are protected. The passenger can be assured the journey is being recorded for their own safety and the driver is also protected from abuse and incidents like assaults.

Police said the taxi drove from West Street to Duke street area of Sheffield

"I do think however it should be the choice of the driver to install it or not.

It's something that should be looked at carefully and I hope their isn't a knee jerk reaction.

"The allegations are very serious and I hope the police and investigate this matter thoroughly and I await the outcome of this."

It's understood the costs would be incurred by the driver.

Some on social media have called for all taxis to have CCTV installed. Woo Tang said: "This is a reason why cabs should have CCTV installed compulsory in my opinion. I really hope the woman recovers well."

Linda Potts added: "Why not make all taxis fitted with CCTV. That way the passenger is safe and so is the driver."

Nicol Cotton posted that 'all taxis' should be fitted with cameras.

Imran Khan said "Sheffield Council should fit cameras in all Sheffield licensed taxis to where footage is uploaded to a system run by them or the police."

In Rotherham, all taxis issued a badge from the local authority must have CCTV installed as part of a new but controversial licensing clause.

Many Rotherham drivers were unhappy at the changes and said they had been 'condemned by association' in the wake of the town's child sexual exploitation scandal

A report by academic and senior social worker Alexis Jay, said some Rotherham taxi drivers played a key role in the abuse scandal. Anyone with information on the rape investigation should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
