Private hire drivers plan go-slow protest for Wolverhampton rush hour

Private hire drivers in Wolverhampton are to carry out a go-slow protest this week during evening rush hour.

Wolverhampton Private Hire Drivers Association, which has 600 members, has notified the council of its intention to carry out the action during rush hour on Thursday.

Councillor Alan Bolshaw, chairman of the city council’s licensing committee has branded the action unnecessary and irresponsible, accusing driver representatives of refusing to enter into meaningful dialogue with the authority.

He said: “We want to make the public aware that the private hire driver representatives are threatening to cause this disruption.

"People need to be kept informed and as far as we are aware Wolverhampton Private Hire Drivers Association haven’t made their intentions public.

“We don’t want people to be taken by surprise if this happens. They say they have 600 members and clearly if hundreds of drivers organise themselves to drive slowly around the city centre at rush hour, it could cause significant disruption.”

The Association is staging the go-slow because it feels there is a lack of dialogue between the council and drivers and claims its concerns are not properly addressed.

If I remember correctly their main gripe is fares which are not set by the council so why should the council discus it with them ?

I suppose a broad line of thinking could suggest otherwise.

The council license operator's who they deem to be 'fit and proper'.

Would a 'fit and proper' operator operate under starvation rates?
