PRIME MINISTER THAKSIN PRESENTS 10 FREE HOUSES TO LUCKY TAXI DRIVERS AS NEW YEAR GIFTS

Ten lucky taxi drivers are presented with free houses and three others with taxi cars this morning during the Prime Minister Meets Taxi Drivers session at Hua Mak Indoor Stadium in Bangkok.

Prime Minister Thaksin said the rewards were intended to be New Year presents from him. The Prime Minister sponsored all the prizes and hand-picked the lucky persons through lots-drawing. He had arranged the gathering in order to inform taxi drivers of his policy concerning the latter's welfare.

In his speech, Prime Minister Thaksin volunteered to solve the poverty problem of taxi drivers. Primarily, he said, he has thought of cutting down their unnecessary expenses while asking for their cooperation in giving useful information that could lead to crime suppression. A fund of five million baht has been established and will be allocated to taxi drivers who have responded to the request.

The Prime Minister also committed to the drivers to arrange taxi parking spots throughout the city to prevent them from running empty cars. He also has also assigned the Metropolitan Police commissioner to see to it that taxi drivers will not be extorted for money by police.
