Driver dies after major crash in Gale Lane in Acomb

A MAN who died after a crash in York at the weekend was a taxi driver for a York company.

Police were called at 11.45am on Saturday to reports of a collision in Gale Lane in Acomb, where it meets Front Street and Askham Lane.

It involved a black Peugeot Expert and a Vauxhall Zafira.

An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene of the crash, and police and a road ambulance also attended.

The male driver of the Peugeot, a taxi driver working for York Station Taxis, was taken to York Hospital by road ambulance, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

Keith Hatfield, manager of the taxi company, based at York Railway Station, said: “It is a terrible tragedy. Our staff are very upset about it, it’s a big shock to everyone.

“He had worked for us for a long time, before me, which was ten years ago.

“We send our condolences to family and friends. We don’t know the cause of the accident. We understand he may have had a heart attack, we don’t know for sure.”

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it received a call at 11.54am before a road ambulance and air ambulance were sent to the scene.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to get in touch.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or either of the vehicles involved before the collision, to contact them.”

Police have yet to identify the driver who died. The cause of the crash has not been confirmed.

Traffic was diverted in the area following the crash and the street closed for a number of hours.

Indeed which reminds me what ever happened to "Stinky Pete" did he retire or just stop posting on here
