Cabbies are unhappy with changes to licensing conditions


Taxi drivers hailed their strike as a success after they say Hyndburn council agreed to meet them to discuss the issue of ‘write-off’ vehicles used as taxis.

Around 130 drivers protested outside Hyndburn council’s Scaitcliffe House on Ormerod Street, Accrington on November 7 against rules regarding taxis damaged under a category D insurance classification. Drivers are also campaigning against plans for taxis to have a ‘59’ plate or newer to meet European emissions regulations.

Taxi driver Raz Hussain said drivers spoke with the council’s chief executive David Welsby and were due for a meeting with them on Thursday, November 10.

He said: “We met with the chief executive and got an appointment. Rather than starting at the bottom we went to the top and now we might get somewhere.”

But Coun Gareth Molineux, Hyndburn council’s portfolio holder for resources, said Thursday’s meeting was arranged prior to the strike and the council would review the issue in the New Year.

He said: “We won’t make concessions that will put the public at risk.”

It appears to be an emissions policy, which IMO is harder to fight against.

Don't get the bit about going on strike to keep a policy of allowing right offs.

No one has confirmed that all those newer vehicles that were involved in the emissions scandal that condoned Councils to pass them to be licensed have in effect been tested after being rectified to meet the required standards correctly.

My vehicle is a older vehicle and passes its test first time on every occasion.

We do not have an age limit government guidance states an age limit challenged,if the vehicle is well maintained it will pass the test so why should it not be licensed,again it is Councils dictating to proprietors to make them look good by bragging we have a newer fleet of cars.

Does not matter how old the vehicle is if it is not maintained or doing a lot of miles per year it will probably fail the test.

There's no reason why a vehicle that does a lot of miles a year should fail the test if it is properly maintained.

That is purely down to finance. A cat D write off will cost a lot less than the same car that has not been subject to write off. Cat D just means that the insurance company didn't think it economical to fix. This is usually only panel damage and other minor work. many insurance policies guarantee a new car if your new car is damaged within the first year.

I sort of understand why they might to license right offs, but I disagree with it, however why put that as a reason to strike?

How much sympathy will you get for that?
