Former taxi driver escapes jail term after slapping sister and harassing brother-in-law

A BANNED taxi driver who slapped his sister and harassed her husband over a long-running family feud has escaped an immediate jail term.

Kamran Rashid, of Malpas Drive, Great Sankey, was handed an eight-month prison sentence at Warrington Crown Court on Friday which was suspended for two years after admitting one count of harassment and common assault.

The court heard how there had been a major fallout between some family members in 2010 but this escalated to an incident on June 29, 2014, at around 5.30pm.

Rashid’s brother-in-law had parked on Bewsey Road while his wife went into the shop.

During this time Rashid, 36, pulled up alongside the victim’s car and began to hurl verbal abuse in his direction which included shouting ‘you are not a male you are a female’.

Rashid called for the victim to get out of the car but he refused, causing the defendant to lash out physically, punching the window and bonnet of the car.

Anna Price, prosecuting, said: “The defendant went to get back in his car but returned to the victim’s car, banging on the window and door while swearing.

“This went on for three to four minutes.”

The victim decided to call the police and, on doing so, Rashid fled into the shop where he shouted abuse at his sister, grabbed her forearm before slapping her.

His sister slapped him back before he pulled her outside and then left the scene.

“The defendant was interviewed following the incident and he said it was the victim causing the problems as he had shown him the finger while driving round Warrington,” said Ms Price.

But Rashid continued to harass his brother-in-law, who also worked as a taxi driver, with further reported incidents on July 24 and August 1, 2014.

Andrew Mcinnes, defending, outlined how the defendant is dealing with a number of personal and financial issues but hoped to turn his life around after finding employment as a delivery driver.

Rashid had been banned from working as a taxi driver following a conviction of battery from September 2015.

Sentencing, Judge Neil Flewitt also handed Rashid an 18 month supervision order and 60 hours of unpaid work.

A restraining order was imposed prohibiting Rashid contact with his sister and brother-in-law.
