Former Sellafield worker and Millom taxi driver accused of sex offences against boy A RETIRED taxi driver is on trial accused of sexually abusing a young boy two decades ago. John Stephens, 69, denies six counts of gross indecency with a child, who was under 14 at the time he claims he was abused. At the opening of the trial at Preston Crown Court, the alleged victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, claims Stephens would abuse him on an almost weekly basis. Following his arrest on suspicion of historic sex offences, Stephens denied ever being alone with the boy, insisting the boy’s mum or another adult would always be there. When the interviewing officer told him about the allegations that had been made against him, Stephens replied: “Definitely not. I don’t know where you have got that from.” Stephens admitted he knew the youngster and would be “playful” with the lad but said he did not buy him sweets. He denied having any sexual interest in young boys. The boy’s mum told the police she had been concerned a tickling game had been inappropriate on one occasion, but dismissed her concerns as Stephens being jokey with her son. Stephens, of Holborn Hill, Millom, denies six counts of gross indecency with a child. He said he worked as a taxi driver in the Haverigg area at weekends and would go out on fares whenever a call came in. During the week he worked at Sellafield, but worked as a driver at the weekends for something to do, as he did not drink or go to pubs. He told police he could see no reason why the man and his mum would lie. Taxi driver cleared of historic sex abuse A TAXI driver has been cleared of sex abuse charges following a trial. Former Sellafield worker John Stephens, 69, always denied the allegations after a man came forward complaining he had been abused by Stephens in the 1980s. The complainant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, claimed that Stephens would abuse him on an almost weekly basis. Following his arrest on suspicion of historic sex offences, Stephens denied ever being alone with the boy. Stephens, who drove a taxi at the weekend, told the court he had no idea why the man would make such complaints. He said: “It has all been like a bad dream." The jury at Preston Crown Court took less than two hours to clear Stephens of all the charges against him. The retired driver, who went by the nickname ‘Fred’, admitted he did not make much money from driving the taxi but said it gave him something to do at the weekends as he did not drink or go to pubs. During the trial, the man claimed he had confronted Stephens outside his house and called him a paedophile, when he saw him last summer. But Stephens, of Holborn Hill, Millom, told the court he had no recollection of any confrontation.
