Melton celebrates after receiving the Purple Flag Award
Melton is celebrating after receiving the Purple Flag status for its evening and night-time economy. Purple Flag is a town and city centre award – similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 17:00 & 05:00. Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.
Melton officially received the Purple Flag new accreditation along with Cheltenham, Leamington Spa and Omagh at an awards ceremony in Cheltenham last week. A further six towns Guildford, Killarney, Mansfield, Newbury, Newry and Watford, also had their Full Renewal status renewed at the ceremony, which was attended by representatives of the Purple Flag Steering group
Cllr Malise Graham, Chair of the Purple Flag Steering Group and Safer Melton Partnership said:
“The award of The Purple Flag was obtained because so many people, businesses and organisations came together in true partnership to demonstrate how Melton has a safe and thriving evening economy that is second to none.
By broadcasting our success, we will build on this solid foundation and strengthen those businesses that are part of the great offer that Melton has”.
Superintendent Kerry Smith said:
“Melton Mowbray is the first town in Leicestershire to be awarded Purple Flag status from the Association of Town and City Management. The Purple Flag is awarded to towns and cities that “meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing the evening and night time economy”. This great achievement is the result of a significant amount of joint working. Leicestershire Police are delighted to have been an integral part of the application and assessment process and look forward to continuing to maintain the high standards that led to this success.”

Where were you based? Tubes is still here and it is still crap.

I was up at the veterinary centre (RAVC) training dogs and looking after the Queens horses. The most un-military corps in the armed forces. Spent two years there and never saw a rifle, did drill or went on exercise ! Was interesting to see the abilities of dogs to sniff out explosives and track people, they can literally find a single bullet buried 4ft underground in an entire field. One of the horses from the Hyde Park bombings was there retired, covered in scars from the attack.
