Two 'teenage' girls arrested after taxi driver was attacked on Wythenshawe street

The 47-year-old victim had to be taken to hospital for treatment

Two ‘teenage’ girls have been arrested after a taxi driver was ‘beaten to a pulp’ in Wythenshawe.

Witnesses say the 47-year-old victim was attacked by a gang of youths after telling them he was booked.

They told the M.E.N the group – two girls and two boys – first tried to take the driver’s keys, before launching a vicious assault.

The victim managed to escape and run off up the road, but is said to have been followed by one of the girls who began hitting him again, knocking him to the floor, before stamping on his head.

It happened at around 9.30am on Sunday morning on Lullington Close.

The driver was taken to hospital, and GMP confirmed two ‘females’ have been arrested and were being questioned by police.

A police cordon was put in place around the Club Cars taxi while officers carried out their investigation.

One neighbour told how her five-year-old daughter saw what was happening out of the window and began screaming.

“It was terrible. My neighbour had phoned for a taxi and when it came round the kids tried getting in it, he told them the taxi was booked and he couldn’t take them anyway because they didn’t ring the base to book one.

“That’s when they tried taking his keys and ended up beating him in the middle of the main road, he got away and then the girl ran up to him and started hitting him, got him to the floor and was stamping on his head.

“It was awful to watch.”

The neighbour added: “The taxi driver was in a right mess, he was beaten to a pulp and was sobbing his heart out. All he was going on about was his young children.”

A spokesman for GMP said: “We were called to Lullington Close in Wythenshawe at 9.32am on Sunday morning to reports of an assault on a taxi driver.

“Two females were detained for assault and remain with officers.

“The 47-year-old victim was taken to hospital, and has since been released.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 using the log number 808 of December 4.”
