Jailed: Taxi driver who raped 18-year-old passengerInsanullah Sarfaraz targeted drunk victim as he was taking her home from night outA taxi driver who picked a teenage woman up from outside a pub in Birmingham and then subjected her to a sustained rape ordeal has been jailed for 10 years.
The 18-year-old victim was left profoundly traumatised by the attack and had considered committing suicide.
Insanullah Sarfaraz, 33, of Newmarket Way, Hodge Hill, who had previously admitted three charges of rape, was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Judge Mukherjee also made an indefinite sexual harm prevention order banning Sarfaraz, who is married and has four children, from working as a taxi driver in the UK.
The victim had gone with a male friend to the Village Inn in Hurst Street and they decided to go home at around 5am on October 23.
When they came out there were quite a number of taxis and they saw a Toyota people carrier with a taxi symbol being driven by the defendant.
They told him they needed to go to addresses in Erdington and Sarfaraz stopped on two occasions to allow the male to withdraw £15 from an ATM.
On the second occasion the defendant had turned round to face the woman, who was quite intoxicated, and told her she needed a massage and rubbed her thigh.
When they got to the male’s address there was some discussion about payment with Sarfaraz saying the journey had cost more.
However he then offered to take the woman to her home “for free.”
The attacker then drove to a “quiet spot” got out of his vehicle and then got on top of the victim in the back, said Aliya Rashid, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court .
Sarfaraz eventually took the woman to her home where she told her parents what had happened to her.
He was later traced by police and linked to the offence through DNA evidence.
In a statement the victim said the incident would live with her for the rest of her life.
She said she had previously self harmed and that it had brought back “dark thoughts.”
The judge told Sarfaraz: “
You were pretending to be a legitimate taxi driver that night. You picked up two people and the female was very drunk and you decided to take advantage of her.
“It is hard to imagine a case where the psychological effect upon a victim of rape is as severe as this.”
Darron Whitehead, defending, said Sarfaraz had shown sincere and genuine remorse.
Inspector Ian Ingram, from West Midlands Polices Public Protection Unit , said: “This man, who was a licensed taxi driver, abused his position to prey on a vulnerable lone woman.
“He has now been put behind bars for a very long time, he will also never be allowed to drive a taxi again and will be placed on the sex offender register for life.
“I would also like to take the opportunity to commend this woman’s bravery for coming forward and throughout this investigation.
“I hope today’s sentence will bring her some comfort as she continues to recover from her ordeal.”
