Just got back from a wet week in North Devon.

Whilst in Ilfracombe I came across a small taxi office.

In the window in big tall letters was the name of the company

Filers Taxies

Bet they greet their customers with Taxee

Bet you read Eats, shoots and leaves by Lynne Truss, the so-called apostrophe fascist.

OK, which one is correct :-k :

Bobs Taxis

Bob's Taxis

Bobs Taxi's

Bob's Taxi's

I've seen all four of them on vehicles and the like (not necessarily Bob, but you know what I mean!).

A guy in our town has Bob's Taxis on the rooflight and Bobs Taxi's on the door.

He also wears blue trousers and brown shoes with black socks.

I don't doubt for a minute you are right MDH.

But if your not, then I know someone who will point you in the right direction.

Must be hedging his bets.

I was in my thirties before I worked it out, but until then I hedged my bets by making sure I never used apostrophes.

At last someone sticks their neck out!

I'm never 100% sure about apostrophes, but I'm very inclined to agree with you.

It's to indicate possession - ie Bob has possession of the taxis, thus Bob's Taxis. However, the taxis have possession of nothing - it's just the plural of taxi, thus no apostrophe required.

However, if you refer to the taxi's rooflight, for example, then there's possession, therefore an apostrophe is required. :-k

I am crap at grammar but surely it depends on the number of Bob's and taxi's involved.

If it was refering to two guys named Bob who shared a taxi then it would be Bobs' Taxi

I think you're right in principle, but 'Bobs' seems a bit akward - the plural of Bob? :-k

The example I usually think about is 'a tax payer's money' - ie that would be if you were referring to one tax payer. However, if you're talking about the plural - ie taxpayers - then because you're not adding an s to indicate possession, the apostrophe goes after the existing s - ie it's not being changed to 'taxpayers's money', but just 'taxpayers' money'.

Basically I always say to myself that if the s is there already then you put the apostrophe after it to indicate possession #-o
