Further Developments In Scarborough Taxi Policy

A new taxi policy put forward by Scarborough Borough Council took another step yesterday.

What the council is proposing, is for all taxis to have their MOTs tested at one site run by the council.

The Council depot would be carrying out MOT testing only, it would not make any alterations to the cars that may fail their test.

This means that local garages will still be able to carry out work needed on the taxis, but not carry out MOT testing.

For example, a taxi from Whitby, would have to drive down to the Council depot in Scarborough to have its MOT done.

This does also mean that the Council depot would have to be open to all public vehicles as well, it cannot be exclusively for taxis.

One decision was not agreed at the Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet meeting yesterday was the proposals to the tread depth of the tyres.

The legal minimum depth of a tyre is 1.6mm, but the proposal was for that minimum legal depth of 2.0mm.

This was met with disagreement by a majority of the Cabinet however, the general policy was passed by Cabinet.

This will now go before full Council before a decision is made.

Bill Chatt is from is from the Council and he said:

"What Cabinet are saying is that the legal limit for tyre depth is 1.6mm. If I took my car to the garage now for an MOT and my tread was 1.7mm that is acceptable.

"What we're trying to say is that with a taxi, because you could have your MOT done, say on a Friday, and it might be 1.6mm. By Monday morning because of the work that taxis do, that minimal depth could reduce down significantly.

"At this moment in time, taxis are MOT'd, and we will go up and visit them if it's in Whitby for example, or they will come to the Council and our staff will do a compliance test.

"What we are proposing is that everything is done in one place. There will be some sort of online booking service where you pay for you MOT to be done at a specific time, and then you will be expected to be there at that time to have the test."

Do you have any evidence to support this claim?
