On Saturday, my husband got into a taxi at the taxi rank in New Road in Spalding.

The taxi had a neon light on the roof and was parked with all the other taxis in a queue. He asked the driver to take him to Springfields, where I would join them for the taxi ride home.

Firstly, the driver did not know how to get to Springfields, meaning my husband had to direct him.

At Springfields, myself and two others got in for the drive home.

We had two stops en route to our house and again my husband had to navigate.

Prior to dropping our second friend home, we noticed that the meter said £11.40.

From here, it was only a three-minute drive to our house.

When we got home, the driver asked for £20, at which point we noticed he had turned the meter off.

My husband and I challenged him on the cost of the journey, questioning how it could cost £8.60 to drive for three minutes.

He claimed we had not been looking at the meter, but the time.

We refused to give him £20, instead giving him £15 and getting out of the taxi.

We just want people to be aware, especially over the Christmas period, not to get ripped off by taxi drivers, who are probably coming in from other areas and are unfamiliar with our town.

I have emailed South Holland District Council about the matter as I am sure he cannot be registered.

oi this is my neck of the woods it happens in my town too !!!! the out of town drivers are cousins,uncles,nephews etc. of the existing drivers 90% of whom live in peterborough and work in spalding a blind eye is turned to help them learn the ropes prior to applying for a badge but the car may have been plated locally just driven by an unlicensed driver

Believe me i've tried BUT going up against the muslim community is something that NO Licensing Officer will do nor will members of the public stick their necks out and put the complaint in writing

If you have actual proof of this and not just hearsay and rumour you should put it all in writing and send copies to the licensing officer, the chair of the committee and the Chief Executive. If nothing is done you will need to follow the complaints procedure all the way to the ombudsman. You may want to send copies to your MP, local councillors and the press.

the proof is always passengers who have been in the car and noticed that the driver doesn't look anything like his picture or knows where they are going and therein lies the problem the complaint MUST come from the passenger not the person they report it to i.e. another taxi driver our council has a rule that they will NOT accept complaints from one driver VS another

getting someone to put in writing and actually say what happened is nearly impossible

He may not have been from out of town ,but sadly we do have a lot of rip of merchants in our trade. I am happy to see them lose their badge.

"He claimed we had not been looking at the meter, but the time." i honestly can understand this mind, i had a old fella a few years ago who blew his fooking stack in my car because there was 12:15 on the meter, the fare was usually £8 .60 , he went crackers, i just let him bang on until he started calling me personally , you are a scum robbing basdid, prostitute yourself for a couple of extra quid etc.., anyway he was about to ring the police, actually dialling 999 , when i informed him that: 1) our meters do not clock up in 5 pence's, its 10`s or 20` depending on tariff 2) the fare was £8.40 but now is £8.80 because of his ranting 3) that he was looking at the fooking radio & it was on absolute radio, frequency ?12:15 he was a regular & i informed him that he would never ever get in my car again, & he never did

You just send someone out who is not a driver and do some of your own test purchases. That is what we did when we had a problem with drivers overcharging. They took a taxi, noted the numbers and got a receipt from the driver. For them to say they will not accept a complaint from one driver against another is just a cop out. Like I said earlier, use the Councillors and the Chief executive and the press.
