Two taxi drivers attacked by men in row over fare in Hull

Two taxi drivers were attacked by a gang of passengers after a row broke out over the fare.

Police are hunting for three men, aged between 18 and 25, in connection with the assault, which left one of the drivers with a broken jaw.

Officers say one of the drivers picked up two men and two women outside Fuel nightclub in Hull city centre at around 2.30am on Thursday, December 29.

Two woman were dropped off at addresses in Anlaby and Willerby before the taxi returned to the city centre with the two men to pick up another man.

An argument then started inside the cab over the cost of the fare. The confrontation carried on as those involved got out of the taxi, and the driver was assaulted on the pavement along Ferensway.

Seeing the attack, another driver rushed to help his colleague but was also attacked, and suffered bruising to his face as a result. It happened at around 3.30am.

Police want to identify the three men, and have asked for the women who had been with the men earlier in the night, to get in touch.

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "We are looking to identify three men. They are all described as white, aged 18 to 25 years. One is five foot, five inches, of stocky build with short dark hair, he was wearing a grey hooded top.

"The second is described as six feet tall of medium build. He was wearing a dark top. The third man is described as around five feet, five inches tall of slim build."

Call the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 2239614, with more information.

Peter Nilsson, chairman of Hull Hackney Carriages Association, described the incident as "absolutely disgraceful" and said he was worried to hear about it.

"This is a problem that drivers face on a daily basis," he said. "We need more support from the police and I'd like to see CCTV installed in every vehicle in the city.

"If somebody doesn't want to pay their fare and wants to attack you then they will. I've been attacked twice in 17 years as a driver and there's nothing you can do.

"We are starting to work more and more with the police, and I hope they take all assaults against drivers seriously.
