Cobridge taxi driver made £10,000 - dealing drugs from his cab Taxi driver Waqas Ahmed made around £10,000 – by dealing drugs from his cab. The 28-year-old would sell heroin to passengers to make an extra £300 to £400 a week over nine months. He was caught after undercover police officers became suspicious when he picked up a fare near the KFC restaurant in Burslem town centre. The customer had climbed in the taxi and Ahmed pulled forward before the man got out and walked off. Officers approached the vehicle and the defendant admitted there was cannabis and heroin inside the cab. Police recovered £2,925 cash, three wraps of heroin worth between £800 and £1,090; two small amounts of heroin worth £80 and £60, and £10 of cannabis. The defendant's home was then searched and police found heroin worth between £2,800 and £3,180 as well as scales and cling film. Now Ahmed of Mercia Crescent, Cobridge, has been jailed for three years at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. Prosecutor Fiona Cortese said police were on plain clothes duty in Burslem at 2.25pm on September 26 when they spotted a man who looked as if he was waiting to meet someone. Miss Cortese said: "After a few minutes the defendant arrived in a taxi. The man got in. The taxi moved forward. The man got out and walked off. Police believed a drug deal had taken place. They approached the taxi and informed the defendant he was going to be searched. "There was cannabis in the console and the defendant indicated there was heroin in the vehicle. Police recovered £2,925 cash, wraps of heroin and 834 milligrams of cannabis vegetation worth £10. Police also seized two mobile phones. "The defendant took police to his home where they recovered 72 grams of heroin worth between £2,000 and £2,080 and more heroin worth between £800 and £1,100." The defendant said the cannabis was for his own use but admitted selling heroin for eight or nine months and making between £300 and £400 a week. Ahmed pleaded guilty to possession of a class A drug with intent to supply and possession of a class B drug. Richard Oldroyd, mitigating, said the defendant, who has no previous convictions, immediately came clean and was 'astonishingly' frank with police. He added the defendant's career as a taxi driver had been ruined as he will not be able to apply for a licence until five years after the end of his prison sentence. Jailing Ahmed, Judge Paul Glenn said: "You were caught red-handed. You went on to admit you had been dealing for eight or nine months, making £300 to £400 a week profit. Taking that at its bottom end, that is getting on for £10,000 profit. "You say you became involved because you had your own cocaine habit. You took a conscious decision to deal for profit and you must pay the consequences. You ran your own drug dealing operation.
