Merseyside Police today confirmed Andrew Oakden, 89, who lived close to the scene of the crash in Grange Lane, has died in hospital. Officers were called out to Gateacre Brow on Saturday evening at 11.25pm to reports the pensioner had been hit by a private hire taxi. He was taken to Aintree hospital with multiple injuries but passed away on Sunday. A woman who works at the Gateacre Institute Club, where Mr Oakden was with friends before the incident last night, said he was “a very frail man.” Pensioner fighting for life in hospital after being hit by a taxi She told the ECHO: “He was not a hardened drinker. “He only ever had two pints of mild and an orange juice before going home to look after his cats. “One of the bar ladies went out last night to tend to him after it happened.” One passer-by at the scene today said “he was a lovely, kind man who kept himself to himself most of the time.” Other residents in the area, who lived above the shops overlooking the junction of Grange Lane and Gateacre Brow, said the taxi involved in the incident was facing the wrong way round in the road when they looked out. A man said: “There was police everywhere for about two hours last night. “The taxi was the wrong way round in the road and they closed it all off.” Before the victim died the 42-year-old driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed limit for a specified drug, driving while unfit through drugs and causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was released today pending a further “disposal decision” by police. i think he might be facing a jail sentence Officers are continuing to appeal for anyone who has any information which could help with their investigation to call 0151 777 5747 quoting the reference 0517042452 or email 8903@merseyside.police.uk |
