POLICE are digging in a garden, thought to be one of the former homes of convicted double murderer Christopher Halliwell, following intelligence received by the force.

The Brunel major crime investigation team are tonight carrying out excavation work at two properties in Broad Street as part of an ongoing investigation.

The operation at 96 Broad Street is expected to last a couple of days, according to reports, and is unrelated to the current owners.

A statement from Wiltshire Police read: “Specialist officers are currently carrying out excavation work within the gardens of two properties in Broad Street as part of the ongoing investigation being carried out by the Brunel major crime investigation team.

“This relates to intelligence that the force has received. We are unable to comment further.”

Halliwell murdered Becky Godden, 20, in January 2003 and Sian O'Callaghan, 22, in March 2011.

He was handed a rare whole life order - meaning he will never be released - at Bristol Crown Court last September after being convicted of Miss Godden's murder.

Speaking last October, Chief Constable Mike Veale said that other women may have been murdered but said there was no evidence at the time linking the former taxi driver to more deaths.
