from BBc news Mr Hammond said he made "no apology" for raising extra money through taxation, "in ways which enhance the fairness of the system". In his first Budget, this included an increase in National Insurance rates for self-employed people. He said the disparity between the rates paid by the self-employed and employees "undermines the fairness of our tax system". Class 4 National Insurance contributions will go up to 10% from 9% and to 11% in April 2019, he told MPs. A separate category of National Insurance payments, Class 2, are already being abolished from 2018, and Mr Hammond said that taken together this meant an average 60p a week increase in NI payments for self-employed person. On its own, the change announced in the Budget will leave 2.84 million people facing an average annual increase of £240. all the publicity Uber have got for the "gig economy" has got all of us hammered !!!! Transport spending of £90m for the north of England and £23m for the Midlands to address "pinch points" on roads peanuts thats going to fix b*gg@r all !!!!!!!!!!!! £500m support for electric vehicles, robotics and artificial intelligence whats the betting that Uber will be given a big chunk of this to develop driverless taxis

How does 60pence a week end up being £240 per year?

The Tory manifesto said no Nat In tax rises. No ifs or buts, no increases. Is the increase justified, maybe, maybe not. But don't say one thing and do another. No good, and cabbies have memories like elephants. |

It wont matter soon anyway because most of the self employed drivers will no longer be self employed, the will be workers under the direction of a company. Just ask Trotsky. |

I think a whole new redefinition of self employment might be needed before this hot potato will cool down. I suspect the NI changes might be a first shot across the bows |

I was talking to some of our drivers a couple of weeks ago and mentioned that they could all soon be classed as workers or employees. They were not best pleased especially when I said that I would then be able to control what hours they worked.

an interesting fact when i started in the trade in 1991 there were about 2.3 million self employed in 2015 there were 4.6 million and is growing at between 100000 and 200000 a year. I think the problem for Uk government is that self employment is rapidly rising compared to PAYE employment and that is hitting tax revenues quite hard |

Reading between the political lines it seems that very soon the firms will be paying Nat In for us, and we will be entitled to some working benefits. Interesting times ahead. |

I completely missed this (3) Van and taxi drivers could be in line for a diesel tax this Autumn The chancellor angered some green campaigners on 8 March by failing to address air pollution – a problem which has been blamed for the deaths of up to 9,400 people a year in London – in his speech to the House of Commons. But, according to a Budget report footnote, the government “will continue to explore appropriate tax treatment for diesel vehicles, and will engage with stakeholders ahead of making any tax changes at Autumn Budget 2017.” |
