Taxi driver 'used car as a weapon to try to kill his mum' by running her over Taxi driver Abdul Abbasi, 32, backed over his mum with such force he shunted a parked car behind by 'a metre or so', a court was told Man 'used car as weapon to kill his own mum by running her over' in Bransholme A dad ran over his own mother to try and kill her after a heated argument and then sped off. Taxi driver Abdul Abbasi, 32, used his blue Vauxhall Astra "as a weapon" as his mum was getting shopping from the boot, Hull Crown Court was told. The 32-year-old backed over his mother with such force he shunted a parked car behind by 'a metre or so'. Abbasi, of Hull,denies attempted murder, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, inflicting grievous bodily harm, and dangerous driving, reports The Hull Daily Mail. Opening the case against him, John Thackray, prosecuting, said: "The prosecuting case is that this defendant used his motor vehicle as a weapon and deliberately ran over his own mother, and in doing so he intended to kill her. "Thankfully, her injuries, although serious, were not life-threatening and she made a good recovery." He told the jury of nine women and three men: "The defendant admits that he ran his mother over but he says it was an accident, and that is one of the principal issues for you to decide in this case. "Did he deliberately run her over, or was it an accident?" The incident happened at about 5pm on October 2 last year, after Mr Abbasi had driven his mother and two young sons into Bransholme. Mr Thackray said: "His mother got out of the vehicle, followed by the children, who were being returned to their mother, the defendant having separated from her. "There were lots of people out and about in Redmire Close and some of them saw [his mother] at the rear of the defendant's vehicle. "She was taking items and the children out of the car when suddenly, whilst the boot was still open and without warning, the defendant reversed back at speed, the engine revving loudly, and he knocked her over. "The car went over the top of her before colliding with a parked black vehicle. "Such was the speed of his manoeuvre that after colliding with her, and with her under the vehicle, he shunted that parked vehicle by a metre or so. "Sadly, his driving did not end there. He didn't get out and help his mother. He, while she was under the vehicle, drove forward and out of the street." The court heard that Abbasi's mother suffered a cut to her forehead and the left side of her face, which was treated by a surgeon. She also had injuries to her hands and multiple rib fractures on both sides, and spent just under two weeks in hospital. Abbasi, who was followed by witnesses in cars, stopped to close the boot before driving to a police station, the court heard. He was arrested and interviewed, and said as he was reversing he "misjudged the speed and hit a car". He did not understand how his mother was behind him, the court heard. He said people were shouting at him and being abusive and that he drove off "because he was really scared". A child who was playing hide and seek in the street told police she saw the incident. She said the woman and the man in the car seemed to be arguing in Indian. Asked why she thought that, she said: "I knew they were arguing because his face was angry. "It was like he was growling at her, like a dog would." She said: "He reversed backwards and she fell on the floor and then he kept on running over her, and then he crashed into this car, and he kept on running over her and then he drove off." Asked what the two boys were doing, she said: "They were crying. I didn't want to move in case he knocked me over or something, so I just stayed away." update mum forgives him A mother who was seriously injured when she was run over by her taxi driver son insists he is a "good boy" and can't wait to give him a hug. Abdul Abbasi, 32, was yesterday cleared of attempted murder, but the jury found him guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He will be sentenced at a later date. Abbasi was accused of using his silver-blue Vauxhall Astra "as a weapon" to first back over his mother, Rehana Abbasi, before driving over her again and fleeing the scene. During the trial, Abbasi insisted he loved his mother and had no motive for wanting to hurt her. Shortly after the verdicts were returned, and speaking through a relative who agreed to translate for her, Pakistan-born Mrs Abbasi told the Mail: "I am very happy that my son has been found not guilty. Thank God! I am dying to see him. I need to see him. I will give him a hug. "I know it was an accident. He is a good boy. He is a good son. He is my only son. He is a taxi driver and works hard." |
