Foul-mouthed retired taxi driver, 74, who called his neighbour ‘a f****ing Irish b*******’ in a bitter nine year feud as he blamed her WASHING for ruining his plants is fined £1,000 Derek Mitchell, 74, would rant at his next-door neighbour Catherine Wantling He claimed her clean clothes hanging on washing line was harming his plants Terrified 68-year-old called police after Mitchell called her 'f****** Irish b******' Mitchell was ordered to pay over £1,000 in fines and costs after being found guilty of racially aggravated harassment and breach of a restraining order A foul mouthed pensioner nicknamed 'Old Git' due to his petty temper tantrums has been reprimanded by a judge over a bitter nine year feud he began with his next door neighbour over her weekly wash. A court heard Derek Mitchell, 74, would rant at 68-year old Catherine Wantling whenever she hung out her clean clothes on a washing line outside their adjoining bungalows - claiming she was killing off his pot plants. The retired London taxi driver, who kept three pots and a garden bench at the front of his £100,000 property in Irlam, Greater Manchester, said Ms Wantling's washing was blocking out sunlight which his shrubs needed to flourish. He even suggested his prized plants were affected by detergent coming from water dripping from the damp clothing. Police were called in last August when Mitchell had a meltdown at Ms Wantling when she emerged from her front door with a new load of washing along with her clothes pegs. As she tried to hang out her washing, Mitchell said: 'You f****** Irish b******' and Ms Wantling called police, saying she was 'terrified' of her elderly neighbour. Later when asked about his behavior, Mitchell claimed he was at 'breaking point' and retorted: 'I only did what any geezer would do.' It emerged the father of two - who got his nickname after the TV characters Fred and Alf Git played by Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse - had a history of harassing Ms Wantling. He had previously gone berserk at the elderly lady after he accused her of playing the same record 'over and over again' and in 2010 had been issued with a restraining order banning him from contacting her. He had also previously been arrested over major meltdowns at his long suffering wife, son and also his local pub landlord. Mitchell was sentenced to a 12-month community order, and was fined £320 with costs and surcharges of £705 At Manchester magistrates court, Mitchell was ordered to pay over £1,000 in fines and costs after being found guilty of racially aggravated harassment and breach of a restraining order. He denied wrongdoing. The feud began in 2008 after Mitchell and his wife Angela, 63, moved in next door to Ms Wantling and he began objecting to her hanging out her washing on the line near their front doors. Prosecuting, John Richards said: 'The defendant is the next door neighbour of the complainant and they have been having a dispute over her washing line for a period of time. He has blamed the woman for the death of some of his plants in his garden.' 'She was hanging her washing up and he came up to her and shouted at her, calling her a 'f****** Irish b****** because he is angry. The defendant claimed he did what 'any geezer would do'. The court heard Mitchell - who also used to work as a security guard - had 26 previous convictions, including public order offences, assault and at least six for drink driving. In 2012 he was arrested following a rush hour rampage when he went to the pub while his wife was on a Valentines day shopping trip with their daughter. During that incident Mitchell - who was dressed in a suit - was ejected from one bar after he got drunk on whiskey, squared up to a customer and then started a punch up with a pub landlord saying: 'Do you want me to knock your block off?'. He then picked up his wife in his Mercedes car in a drunken fury before driving her home using the wrong side of the road to avoid rush hour traffic whilst twice the limit. His vehicle eventually ploughed head on into two oncoming cars then careered on before crashing into a third vehicle at a roundabout. Later while he was in custody Mitchell flicked his braces into the face of a policeman cutting his face. Mitchell was jailed for 18 months for dangerous driving and assault but in 2014 was back in court again after he knocked back six glasses of red wine and got violent whilst his son was visiting. During his meltdown, Mitchell ripped his wife's nightdress, hit her in the face and pulled her hair. Their son tried to intervenee but was head-butted leaving him with cuts to his mouth. He had also been in court for using anti-Semitic words towards police officers. In the latest offence, Ms Wantling gave evidence against Mitchell from behind a screen. He was sentenced to a 12-month community order, and was fined £320 with costs and surcharges of £705. Passing sentence District Judge Alexandra Simmonds said: 'The victim is his neighbour and there have been issues in the past over a washing line and some of Mr Mitchell's plants. 'It's quite clear Mr Mitchell holds the witness responsible for killing some of his plants and that this washing line is a source of dispute between the two of them. 'Mr Mitchell does have a previous conviction in relation to this complainant and he has called her a 'f****** Irish b****** on a number of occasions. Mr Mitchell does appear to have motive for this offence as he is fed up of her doing this and he wasn't polite to her in his own words when he spoke to her that day. 'On August 29 there was a dispute with him and his neighbour over this washing line. I found him guilty of calling her a 'f***king Irish b***ard. Because you did that it breaches a restraining order which was there to prevent you from committing this sort of offence. 'I take the view that the breach is so serious that a community penalty is justified. I would like punish him for what he has done. I hope this stops you doing this again.' Ms Wantling - who has lived at her home for 17 years was not available for comment at her home. But a neighbour said: 'The feud between them has been going on for years. The lady always used the washing line but he took massive objection to it almost as soon as a he moved in. He kept going on and on about her blocking the sunlight and the drips for her clothes killing his pot plants but it was all rubbish. 'This lady's had a real nightmare with this man. He may look like a gentle soul but he's got a real nasty streak in him. We call him Old Git because of his grumpiness. He moans about anything and everything.'
