Carlisle mum 'drunk in charge of daughter' hurled racist insults at taxi driver

A drunk mum being taken home with her young daughter in a taxi directed a barrage of racial abuse at the driver.

The woman – in her thirties and from the Carlisle area – argued with the cabbie about the route he was taking and at one stage told him: “You don’t belong in this country.”

At the city’s Rickergate magistrates court, the woman admitted racially aggravated threatening behaviour and child neglect.

John Moran, prosecuting, described how the defendant came to the attention of police after the taxi driver was asked to collect a passenger from outside a pub on Botchergate on January 8.

“When he arrived at the pub,” said Mr Moran, “the defendant’s daughter [who was of primary school age] was outside and the defendant was still inside the pub.”

The woman emerged after a couple of minutes and was clearly drunk, the taxi driver later told police.

As he was driving her back to her home address, the defendant became verbally abusive, swearing at the driver after telling him he didn’t know what he was doing.

She also directed racially abusive insults at him.

“He was very upset by the comments,” said Mr Moran.

“Those comments were said in the presence of a young child.”

In his impact statement, the taxi driver said: “This has made me feel really bad. The way that female spoke to me was a horrible way to speak to a human being. It was really upsetting.

“I have lived in England since 1981 and call it my home.

“My whole family lives in this country and my children were born in this country. I didn’t return to work after the incident as I was too upset. It would have affected my work.”

The man called police and when officers called at the defendant’s house they found her “heavily intoxicated,” said the prosecutor.

She appeared at that stage not to accept being drunk but she did accept making the racial comments to the taxi driver.

Her last conviction was in 2015 for drink driving. Since the January incident, the court heard, social services had become involved in the case.

Mark Shepherd, for the woman, said: “She is truly ashamed of her behaviour and what took place. The taxi driver was doing no more than carrying out his public duty.”

Since committing the offences, the woman had voluntarily sought help, referring herself to the drug and alcohol agency Unity.

District Judge Gerald Chalk told the woman: “You know perfectly well why it is an offence to abuse someone because of their race.”

He commented that the neglect offence was serious but in this case the risk had been potential. But the defendant had actively sought help for her problem.

He imposed a 12-week curfew – from 8.30pm to 6am – which will be electronically tagged. The defendant must also pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

The defendant cannot be named for legal reasons.
