Pervert Tunbridge Wells taxi driver behind bars after filming up the skirts of 93 schoolgirls A perverted Tunbridge Wells taxi driver who filmed up the skirts and legs of 198 different women, including 93 schoolgirls, has been jailed. Grandfather Mark Durden, 60, was sentenced to a year in prison for his actions following a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court today (Friday, March 17) after he pleaded guilty to outraging public decency. Durden, of Old Town Hill, Lamberhurst, admitted taking 268 videos of young women in the Tunbridge Wells area, particularly in and around Royal Victoria Place shopping centre, over the course of three years. From the 268 different iPhone clips police found on his computers and phones, 93 videos were believed to be of teenage schoolgirls, identified by their school uniform. But Durden denied being drawn to the schoolgirls because of their age – blaming it on their uniforms and short skirts. The grandfather was arrested in June 2016 following a report from an employee of Topshop in Tunbridge Wells who recognised Durden had repeatedly visited the shop after 3.30pm and "was clearly not in the shop to purchase anything." The employee added that Durden had been "looking at young girls, mainly in school uniform, and following them around the shop," adding that it was "creepy and made me feel uncomfortable". Durden had been approached by staff after he was seen in Topshop on "four or five different occasions", but claimed he was shopping for clothes for his niece – though raised alarms when he could not give her age or size. The 60-year-old grandad was arrested after CCTV footage was obtained by Kent Police, who found a number of computers and mobile phones as well as a black laptop bag during a search of his house. Upon further investigation, the laptop bag was found to have a clear pocket at one end, where Durden could conceal his iPhone beneath a stack of magazines which had a hole cut out so the lens could film through the clear pocket. The video clips ranged between the dates of June 12, 2013, and June 10, 2016, showing Durden filming up the skirts of girls and the legs of women. The footage revealed he had targeted girls in a string of Tunbridge Wells shops including New Look, Marks and Spencer, Miss Selfridge and Claire's Accessories. After Durden's arrest, a number of women came forward saying they recognised him and may have been a victim of his voyeurism, prompting Kent Police to put out official advice to those who felt they may have been targetted. Recorder Cairns Nelson QC, presiding in Maidstone Crown Court, said: "You used a mobile phone's video camera concealed in a laptop bag to take video images up the skirts of women and girls, particularly in shops schoolgirls would attend. "It is the sheer scale of this that is the trouble. Over three years you recorded 268 videos featuring 198 different women and 93 teenage schoolgirls." Judge Nelson commented on the intimate nature of the images, but was willing to take into account Durden's previous good character and lack of prior convictions, his early guilty plea, and a number of family issues including his ill wife. He reduced Durden's prison sentence from 18 months to one year. As he delivered his sentence, he described the offences as "extremely serious", adding that it was the "planning and persistence" of Durden's actions which led him to his conclusion, with the targeting of young girls as an aggravating factor.
