Outrage as taxi rank slashed at busy train station

Local taxi drivers have been left up in arms following the news that the number of taxi rank slots at Oxenholme station is set to be slashed.

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has labelled the plans “unhelpful” for the public and “unfair” on taxi drivers, and is calling on the station authorities to reconsider the plans.

Plans obtained by Tim show that the number of taxi parking slots is due to be reduced from 5 to 2, and moved further away from the entrance.

This is despite the fact that there are around 15 taxi drivers who pay a significant sum for a permit to use the taxi rank.

Tim has been in contact with both Network Rail and Virgin to push for the plans to be reconsidered.

Tim said: “Everybody who uses the station knows that there are problems with traffic and parking. However, these ill-conceived plans will do nothing to tackle these problems. There must now be a proper consultation so that those who actually use the station can raise their concerns.

“This change would be unhelpful for the public who need access to taxis and unfair on the taxi drivers who are trying to make a living. Taxi drivers provide a valuable service to both local residents and tourists. There is no way that two taxi spots can be enough when you have a train full of tourists turning up at once.

“The authorities could help to ease the flow of traffic by better advertising that members of the public can get 20 minutes free parking in the car park 50 yards away.”

Its a train an hour between Oxenholme and Kendal

or a 3 mile cab journey

If it's busy Network Rail will charge them for a permit. Network Rail would've done their homework first.
