Police forensic officers are continuing to comb the scene of a fatal stabbing at a tram stop in Birmingham.

Specialists wearing white bio suits and masks were focusing their attention on a blue tarpaulin tent erected just outside the entrance at the Soho Benson Road Metro stop in Winson Green.

It follows the death of a man believed to be in his 50s.

He was found collapsed at the tram stop just before 5pm on Friday.

He is understood to have sustained multiple stab wounds and died at the scene.

On Saturday a police search team was also using shears to cut back bushes by the side of the entrance as they scoured the ground for evidence.

Detectives were also at the scene on a bridge which is currently cordoned off by uniformed police as the inquiry continues.

One forensic expert was using a torch and a magnifying glass to carry out his work.

A 100 metre section of the bridge is currently cordoned off.

The scene is next to a small industrial estate and Benson Community School.

Taxi driver Malkiat Singh was at a cab workshop on the estate this afternoon.

He said: “It’s a sad fact of life that this has become the norm now, it’s happening everywhere.

“I’ve been driving for 35 years and nothing surprises me any more, people go ballistic for nothing.

“I saw the crime scene when I arrived at the garage this morning and I can’t say I’m shocked. It’s just part of life.

“You have to be careful in this area, especially at night. We have had taxis broken into before.”

Another cab trader, who asked not to be named, said a trader on the estate had seen the victim “with holes in his chest”.

The driver added: “I can’t say I’m shocked either. You do have to be careful around here, but then you need to be everywhere nowadays.”

The drivers were at the Taxi Cabs accident repair centre which borders a 50 metre line of bushes and scrub where police officers wearing caps and heavy duty black clothing were using shears and wooden poles to sift for evidence.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Fitzpatrick, who is leading the investigation in conjunction with West Midlands Police, said: “We’re still trying to establish exactly how the man came to receive his injuries.

“At the moment, it is unclear whether the man was stabbed on the platform approach or sustained his injuries elsewhere.

“The incident occurred around rush hour and I’m certain there would have been people around who can help us find out exactly what happened.”

British Transport Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact police via the non-emergency 101 number.
