shock horror A taxi driver has been spotted driving on a new wide cycle lane in Cambridge. The old adage that taxi drivers ‘think they own the roads’ comes to mind when seeing this photograph - but in this case its a cycle path. However, city cabbies haver condemned the driver. The brand new cycle route in Water Street was built for riders - but one taxi driver seemingly tempted by its width and lack of ‘traffic’ decided to use it instead of the road. Paul Bradley, vice chairman of Cambridge Hackney & Private Hire Association, said: “This is unacceptable behaviour and should be no excuses. “Unfortunately this private hire should be displaying company signs unless it’s hidden by the post in picture so the company should be pulling him too. “I’m sure the licensing team at the council will be having a stern word. As a whole we have a high standard here with city-plated cars, but will always get occasions when standards drop or human error occurs which shouldn’t happen, obviously.” Police are reminding drivers it is illegal to drive on cycle lanes and to be aware of new road layouts for the safety of cyclists and other drivers. A Cambridgeshire police spokeswoman said: “It is illegal to drive in cycle lanes and we take the safety of all road users very seriously. We would advise motorists to pay extra attention to areas where there have been new road layouts.” |

The Taxis not on the Cycle lane at that point...the Signs advertising the Cycle crossing lane are either side of the bollards where the cyclist is and he's not there at the point of being caught on camera...behind him looks like a lane leading to some kind of parking bay or turning point..pretty confusing. |
