An Ellesmere Port taxi company has been the first to license a wholly-electric vehicle in the Cheshire West borough.

Sutton Cars, based in the Northern Light Business Park in the town, licensed a Nissan Leaf with Cheshire West and Chester Council’s licensing team.

The company has been using the zero emissions vehicle for part of its school travel contract, transporting pupils to and from school; and is delighted with it.

In fact, staff have been queuing up to drive it, say bosses!

The council’s director of place operations, Maria Byrne said: “Air quality is a high priority to the council, so we are delighted that this business is making it a priority too.

“I’m sure more and more people will be attracted to the benefits this type of vehicle provides.

“Our hackney and private hire vehicles and drivers are among the best in the country as they are required to meet standards way above what is required in other parts of the UK.

“The use of this fast developing technology will no doubt form a key part of the services they offer in the future.”

Lewis Arrowsmith, director of Sutton Cars, added: “Our business has plans to have a fleet of all electric vehicles within five years.

“We’re very impressed with the technology and the mileage range of electric vehicles is improving all the time.

“Changing to electric vehicles results in better air quality and that means we’re able to do something to protect the heritage of ancient cities, like Chester.”

Charging points for electric vehicles are available across Cheshire West and government grants are available to assist with the installation of home or commercial charging points.
