Taxi driver who knocked out 14-year-old boy's teeth after egg is thrown at his cab is jailed

A taxi driver has been jailed for punching out his front teeth after an egg was hurled at his cab by a group of youths. Qamar Yaqub, 32, also reversed his cab 14-year-old Mason Taylor - who had not thrown the egg - before punching him. The Stoke Sentinel reports that he was jailed for nine months for the incident in Bentilee, Stoke-on-Trent, last December. The teenager's family now plan to claim compensation for the injuries and take legal action against the taxi firm which employed

Prosecutor Jemma Gordon told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court: "The group of youths had bought some eggs to throw at cars. One of the complainant's friends threw one at the defendant's car. "The defendant carried on towards Calvary Crescent for 20 feet and then came to a stop and reversed back. The complainant's friends all ran away."

"As he was getting up the defendant exited the car and asked who had thrown the egg. The complainant said it wasn't him. "The defendant said he did not care who had thrown it, grabbed him by the shoulder and punched him to the face, knocking him to the floor." Mason was left needing extensive dental treatment which is expected to continue until he reaches adulthood.

The defendant told police three lads had approached him and he thought he was going to be assaulted. He threw a punch, panicked and drove off.

In a victim statement, Mason said he has lost confidence. It said he was embarrassed by his appearance and still has to go to the dentist regularly.

Yaqub, from Lightwood, denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm but was convicted after a trial. Tony Cooke, mitigating, said the defendant has no previous convictions and is well respected in his community. He said: "He still feels in his own mind it was the previous assault he suffered that caused him to react the way he did. "He accepts he needs help with his temper. He was not driving a car straight at him. It could have been accidental."

Recorder Andrew Easteal told Yaqub his actions were 'unacceptable'. He said: "Nobody can deny the complainant was part of a group who were a menace. Other drivers would have been annoyed, shaken and frustrated by this behaviour. "Your loss of temper was wholly disproportionate to what they were doing. You punched him full in the face with devastating effect. "He is 14, you are a grown man. It has to be understood grown men cannot lose their temper in the way you did and assault children."

Mason's family have welcomed the sentence.

Bet that driver would not have stopped to deal with the situation had they been adults, which proves he's a coward. We've all endured a lot of agro in this game, obviously this idiot hasn't learned to deal with it.

We sure have, the kid obviously hasn't had the rights and wrongs drilled into him. I bet his mother and father are the Jeremy Kyle sorts drinking White Lightning Cider and smoking them organic ciggies all day to stoned to think about the little [edited by admin] out on the streets throwing stuff at vehicles.
