Garage owner hails "incredible" hero taxi driver who foiled armed robbery

A garage owner has praised a taxi driver who pulled over to tackle armed robbers. Tristan King, who has owned the Castelle Service Station on Sherwood Street in Warsop since November, said Karl Holden had spotted two men allegedly with scarves on their faces walking into the shop at around 7.20am on Saturday.

The taxi driver then pulled in front of the door and confronted the two men, who allegedly had what appeared to be a gun. Mr King, 38, said: "What Karl did was absolutely incredible. You've never seen anything like it. "I asked him if he was in the army because the way he took them on was amazing. He doesn't want to make a big deal out of it but what he did was incredible. He is a hero. "He managed to get hold of them and roughed them up a bit. Honestly, the CCTV footage looks like something out of an action film. "His actions meant we could get a better look at their faces on CCTV, thanks to this hero of a man who put his life at risk."

Mr King told the Mansfield Chad that Mr Holden had said he "acted on impulse and felt like he needed to help". Mr King said the thieves only got away with £100 - which is the most ever kept on the site. He is also now employing a company to watch the CCTV so police can be called in case a similar event ever happens again. "As a family, we've owned convenience stores for the last 20 years and haven't had any problems for the most part. "But over the last two years, we've had this kind of thing happen three times. We've owned the service station since November, and I believe it's the first time this has happened in its history. It's been there for years and years."

Otis Kirby, aged 20, of Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield, has been charged with robbery and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence in connection with the robbery. However, police are still appealing for information, and anyone who knows about the incident can call 101.
