Private hire driver charged after knife found in car

Driver and passenger in another car accused of knife possession after city centre swoops

A private hire driver has been charged with possessing a knife after police searched his car during patrols in Liverpool.

And a passenger in other car has also been charged after a knife was found when police pulled over another vehicle just over half an hour later in a separate swoop.

On both occasions police stopped the cars because they were being driven erratically.

At around 8.25pm, mobile patrol officers stopped a silver Ford private hire taxi in Vauxhall Road due to the manner of driving.

Following checks by officers, a knife was found in the footwell of the car. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

Today police said 26-year-old James Ashton from Eldonian Way, Vauxhall was arrested and charged with possession of a knife in a public place and bailed to appear at North Liverpool Plea Court at South Sefton Magistrates Court on Friday, November 24.

In a separate incident at around 9pm, an officer on mobile patrol in Copperas Hill saw a Vauxhall Vectra driving erratically.

The car was stopped on Lime Street and police seized a lock knife after searching a passenger.

And today police said 21-year-old Adam Pagan from Oakhill Drive in Lydiate was arrested and charged with possession of a knife in a public place.
He was bailed to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court in Derby Square on Thursday, November 30.

Local Policing Superintendent Mark Wiggins said: "We will continue to be proactive in our patrols around Liverpool City Centre and across Merseyside to ensure that we reduce offences, and educate people on the serious consequences of carrying any weapon.

"I would like to issue a strong message that carrying a bladed weapon is a criminal offence, and carries significant consequences. The reason for this is that knives kill and people carrying knives is a threat to our communities. I can assure you that we will act on all information reported to us, and if you know anyone who is carrying such weapons then do the right thing, and let us know."

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or the Crimestoppers line anonymously on 0800 555 111.
