nasty in newcastle Three men have been charged after a series of alleged armed robberies targeting taxi drivers in Newcastle and Gateshead. Northumbria Police say the alleged incidents involved offenders getting into taxis, acting as fare paying passengers, and directing the drivers to a destination before threatening and robbing them of money and other property. The first incident happened on Diana Street in Newcastle, in the early hours of October 19, when a taxi driver was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by two men. Next, a driver was the victim of an alleged knifepoint robbery with three offenders near Priory Court in Gateshead on the morning of November 3. Two further alleged gunpoint robberies took place in Byker with two offenders responsible, both crimes in the early hours of November 6, both on Brinkburn Street, after they earlier picked up fares from other locations. The taxi drivers targeted in these alleged crimes were shocked by the incidents but otherwise unharmed and have been helping police. Detectives in Newcastle have charged three men: • Brandon Makumbe, 20, of Priory Court, Gateshead, charged with one count of robbery and threatening a person with a bladed instrument. • Silindokuhle Mabaso, 18, of Avondale Rise, Byker, charged with three robberies and two counts of possessing an imitation firearm and threatening a person with a bladed instrument. They both appeared before Bedlington Magistrates on Thursday. The third man was due to appear at the Bedlington court on Friday. Al-Hazzar Aremu, 18, of Fourstones Close, Kenton, was charged with four robberies, three counts of possessing an imitation firearm and threatening a person with a bladed instrument. |

Be interesting to see what sentence they get should they be convicted. Due to their age i’m not holding too much hope. |

Gang posed as passengers to rob Tyneside taxi drivers in terrifying gunpoint heists These three armed bandits are facing lengthy prison sentences after targeting taxi drivers in a series of gunpoint and knifepoint robberies. The armed raiders posed as genuine customers, asked to be driven to specific locations before pulling out their weapons, making threats and stealing valuables. A number of taxi drivers fell victim to the gang, who struck in Newcastle and Gateshead in October and November last year. Now Al-Hazzar Aremu, Brandon Makumbe and Silindokuhle Mabaso are facing substantial jail terms after they pleaded guilty to robbery and weapons charges. Aremu and Mabaso had admitted their guilt at earlier hearings and now Makumbe has also pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court. Judge Robert Spragg adjourned sentence until next month and told Makumbe: “You, very sensibly, have pleaded guilty to these matters and will get credit for that from the sentencing judge in due course. “I’m adjourning the case for the preparation of pre-sentence reports but you appreciate a custodial sentence is inevitable in relation to these offences.” Makumbe, 20, of Priory Court, Gateshead, pleaded guilty to robbery and possessing an imitation firearm on October 19 at Diana Street, Newcastle. He also admitted robbery on November 3 and threatening another with a blade or point, namely a machete and hunting knife, at Sunderland Road, Gateshead. Aremu, 18, of Fourstones Close, Kenton, Newcastle, admitted robbery and possessing an imitation firearm at Diana Street on October 19 and robbery and threatening with a knife from November 3 at Sunderland Road. He further admitted a robbery at Priory Court, Gateshead, on November 5 and another charge of possessing an imitation firearm on the same date. Mabaso, 18, of Avondale Rise, Byker, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to robbery and possessing an imitation firearm at Priory Court on November 5 and robbery and possessing an imitation firearm at Brinkburn Street, Byker, on November 6. Northumbria Police said previously that the attacks involved the offenders getting into taxis, acting as fare paying passengers, and directing the drivers to a destination before threatening and robbing them of money and other property. The taxi drivers targeted were shocked but otherwise unharmed. The three robbers will be sentenced next month and are remanded in custody. |
